I borrowed a Dell Optiplex 745 from my uncle, and I purchased an Intel i3-6100 Processor. I see now that the sockets are different. I want to know if I can change the motherboard to fit the socket requirements. This is my first "computer build". Not sure if I can really consider it that since I'm just upgrading an old Dell. Anyways, I really need help. I've paid $109 for this processor, and I wouldn't mind paying extra for a motherboard.

You would need new ram, and power supply too and probably a GPU as well.
And then there's the hassle of connecting the proprietary case connectors to the replacement motherbd.
I believe the drives in a 745 were sata so those would transfer over.

And lastly since you changed the motherbd, you are legally obligated to purchase a new windows license as the OEM license that came with the Dell is tied to the Dell motherbd.

All in all : IMO, return the cpu and save up for a new system.

I'm sending the processor back. I already purchased the NVIDIA GTX 750 Ti. Btw, this is an Optiplex 755 SFF. Sorry about the confusion. Can just buy this: http://www.frys.com/product/8708491?source=google&gclid=Cj0KEQiA4o3DBRCJsZqh8vWqt_8BEiQA2Fw0eUYa7BBOCDilRy2AFvyPT4RFa_LpRntsi1UG0c26IegaAo5p8P8HAQ and plug in the NVIDIA GTX 750 Ti 2GB and just have it outside my case?
