Hello. I recently installed Windows 8 off of a bootable USB that i created using Rufus. When creating the bootable usb, i forgot the setting it was, but i changed the option from Fat32 to NTFS, The install went smoothly but when i got to my desktop, everything on my C: drive was missing. When i checked the file explorer, the C: drive had no storage used bar and simply said "NTFS". When i tried opening the drive or anything in it, i recieved the message "C:\ is not accesible . Access Denied". I tried changing permissions in both safe mode and through the normal boot. Most of the things had the permissions change (such as games) but things like ProgramFiles and other OS related files/folders would recieve an error message that the access was denied. Was this because I used NTFS instead of Fat32?

Solution

Rufus setting Fat32/NTFS impacts only file system on USB flash drive.
It has nothing to do with file system on your C: drive.

Reinstalling windows with other option will change nothing.
USB drives would have to be in fat32 format or else they will not boot. During the windows install it automatically formats the hard drive to NTFS so it sounds like a bad install. i would re-create the windows 8 USB drive and do another clean install. if it still doesn't work then it may probably is wherever you got the copy of windows 8 from

If i reinstall windows 8 as fat32, will i lose what's on the ntfs drive?

if you reinstall windows it will not format or partition the drive. also it is not recommended to use the FAT32 filesystem because it is so limited
