When I plug an adapter cable into the peripheral/sata connection on my PSU, the PSU shuts down. The PSU resets when I turn the PSU off and then on again.

Unfortunately, I think that we blew the motherboard trying to use this adapter cable 1 in conjunction with a second cable to power an SSD.

My questions are these:
1. Why is the PSU shutting off when I plug in "cable 1" to the 6 pin pci-e port?
2. Would turning the PSU on with this cable arrangement and having the 24 pin plugged into the motherboard, fry the motherboard?
3. Is there a better cable arrangement for this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You are not doing it right.
Cable 1 connects to a molex powercable that is already connected to the psu. it then goes into a gpu.
Cable 2 connects to a molex power cable that comes from the PSU, the sata end then goes into a drive (ssd, hdd, or optical disk)

Yes, this mis-wiring could destroy every component attached to the PSU or motherbd.
*could* meaning that it all depends on the quality of the power supply and the protections it offers.
