i7 4770k. RealTemp says it's at 80c with nothing running besides a couple background programs like GeForce Experience. At 80c, I'd expect the PC to shut down quickly, but it's been around 3 hours since it's been at this temp with no shutdown. The maximum so far is 100c and minimum is 65c.

On a possibly related note, CSGO, which used to run at 400fps with this same card (GTX 670) now cannot even get above 30fps with up-to-date drivers.

I just completed a fresh install of Windows with NIC drivers, graphics drivers, and chipset drivers. Nothing else besides a couple programs like Skype, Steam, etc.

Any help is appreciated.

I think its the stock heatsink cant hand the high end i7 anymore. Here is 2 good heatsinks. Check to make sure if your case supports them.

I reapplied thermal paste two days ago. It's the stock heatsink. I don't think that's the problem because four days ago before I got my new mobo, it would run at 50-60 idle. It's so high sometimes that when I run a stress test the temperature actually goes down to 60-70 from 90.

if you just replaced your motherboard it may be the culprit. If you done your thermal paste more then once with this board and the temps changed with said board...might be worth looking into. Also going with a stock heat-sink doesn't make much since with a K series chip. They are hot and even hotter if you OC. I would think about a better cooler regardless. It should be sufficient for stock volts and clock but it's hardly ideal for a k series.

This is the first time applying thermal paste to this board but probably the sixth or seventh with this processor and cooler. I'm not against buying a good cooler if that really is the culprit, but I want to make sure there actually is a problem first.

I just find it odd that the PC doesn't restart when it says my processor is at 90-100 degrees celsius! And yeah, the motherboard (ASUS Gaming 5) says that on it's qcodes when it's running, as well as in the BIOS. Is it possible the sensor is broken or could it actually be that hot? Not overclocked by the way.

EDIT: It's down to 58 now which is great, considering I didn't do anything to fix it. It probably will jump back up to 90 at some point.

your sensor well may be defective and if so your stuck with it. Getting a better cooler is just an extra thing to do especially if you do/plan to overclock. If you had better temps before clearly something changed, I was only trying to figure out if you ever had the cooler temps on you new motherboard or just you old one. Could be a voltage regulation issue if that is the case on your new board. If it has been cool on both then I am not sure what to think.

Yeah, it just spiked up to 90c again running a benchmark. I didn't even start the benchmark yet, it was at 85 when the UAC popped up for administrative rights to run the benchmark!

The air seems to be very cool around the processor and inside the case. Graphics card is at a steady and cool 30 when idle. So I'm not really sure where to go next.
