Alienware Aurora R3
windows 7 64bit service pack 1
14gb 1333mhz ram. Was 6gb originally, added 8gb kit
amd radeon hd 6950 2gb
1tb Seagate 7200 rpm

As the title states after installing 8gb it now shows in
Control Panel>Systemand Security> System
Installed Memory(ram): 10gb (1.99 gb available)

Now I looked up memory, opened case and got exact same MHz that was already installed on the computer. Also got dell recommended exact upgrade. I didn't go into System before so idk whether or not if the system was identifying all 6gb before hand but I do know the usage wasn't ever past 30%. After installing the 8gb kit its always at 60-90% memory usage so that's how I knew it was only using 2gb in the first place.

Going into system and seeing that confirmed it for me. Please advise

Solution
the issue could be with ram slots too ... if you happen to still have the warranty with dell you can give them a call and request for onsite support ... and it will be better if you buy the RAM from dell directly (a little pricey) and request for on site installation too (which will cost you some money of coz)

its most likely a faulty ram or not installed properly ...

try remove the all the RAM and test it one by one ...

i had similar issue but after remove and reconnect them back .. works fine now

I have put the 3 original 3x2gb sticks back in all of the tan ram slots.

My sytem reads installed ram which reads 6.0gb and only 3.99gb available.

I am now going to try adding the 2x4gb into two of the black ram slots and see if they read through the control panel system view

EDIT:
I have now installed one stick of 4gb ram in a black slot for a total of 10 gb ram installed total.

The system reads 8.00 gb installed (1.99 gb usable). So after adding one stick in the first black slot I get only 8 out of the total 10 gb even reading through the control panel>system

I have tested one by one with the 3x2gb sticks. I get 6gb total and 3.99gb available in system. Each stick individually, so only 2gb at a time, started up my computer each time.

Once I added the 4gb stick to the equation things got a little weird. It read 8 instead of ten and the available went down to 1.99gb again by only adding the one 4gb stick in an alternate slot.

My mobo has 3 tan slots and 3 black slots alternating like so
dimm2black dimm5tan dimm4 black dimm3tan dimm2black dimm1tan.

the 3x2gb are each installed in the tan and when I added the 4gb stick to dimm2 that's when it only recognized 8gb instead of the 10gb total installed and the available then went down to 1.99gb from 3.99 gb.

I did a bios boot and with this configuration installed I looked at the ram in bios. it said I had 2 Samsung that were 1067mhz a Kingston that was 1067mhz and another Samsung that was 1333mhz.

I wonder if I was sent the wrong ram MHz rating, though when I ordered it read 1033mhz. My mobo can take up to 16xxmhz or some such comparable number and I tried to get 1033mhz to match what was currently installed.

ok if 6 slot it means your mobo running on triple channel memory ...

try to add the 2x4gb rams and 1x2 gb ram in tan slot ... and boot up ... your system should recognize 10 gb in total and atleast 9 gb usable ...

ok, well either the 4gb isn't compatible with my computer, though it should be at 1333mhz, or its bad as you say. I cant believe both sticks I received were bad. I ordered through amazon and I've gotten SSD's and GPU's through them without any issues before....

If I only have one or both of the 4gb sticks in the tan slots with all of the 2gb sticks removed I get BIOS beep code for unseated or failed memory but when I have it installed in the black slots and the 3x2gb in the tan slots and run windows memory diagnostic it says nothing is wrong. I am returning regardless because it's evident the 2x4gb wont be working in this system. I will probably go with a single 1033mhz 8gb stick this time and see where that gets me.

Anyways, I still wonder why it reads 6gb total and 3.99gb usable in the system view. Is there a reason or explanation behind this, does windows use some of that ram for something else?? My display is set to use amd radeon hd 6950 2gb so I dont understand why I dont have as much available as possible.

EDIT:
I'm having a tough time tracking down 8 or 16gb 1066mhz 1.5 volt ram. Everythinig I'm seeing on Amazon is either for a Macbook or specifically for a server and says it won't be compatible with a PC. The ram I purchased was dell recommended yet it won't work, I really need to upgrade this thing before I give my cousin a 6gb ram slowpoke.

no chance on that warranty. machine is well over 5 years old. it could be mobo who knows, maybe I will try to replace the mobo with a cheap replacement but first I am trying one more set of ram
