I want to oc my i5 6600k from 3.5ghz to 4.2 at least. Here are my specs:
Gpu: gtx 1070 zotac amp edition
Psu: evga supernova g2 850w
Cpu: i5 6600k
Cpu cooler: evo 212
Mobo: z170 gaming 3
Ram: hyper x 2133mhz ddr4
Storage: 120gb kingston ssd and 1tb Seagate hd

If any additional information is needed just let me know.

Any tips on overclocking is appreciated as this is my first time. I am planning to up my voltage by .1 and then try to achieve the 4.2 with 1.3 vcore going up in increments of 100 mhz

Hi and welcome to Tom's forum.

The 1st thing to do is check until you can go with the stock voltage that means that you have to go to your BIOS disable the power saving options, turbo options and C-Stage options. In that way you can start like you say, 100MHz at time and test stability...how? Easy...do all what you do normally...games...surf the web...programs..etc while your can use programs like prime95 or Intel Burn Test, the real challenge is keep the rig stable at daily work so...test it with daily work.

Let me know the results and remember ONLY change CPU frequency, in future you can change more things but after you have a CPU OC stable.

And yes, it is safe practice overclocking with that hardware. Just keep in mind that all hardware have a limit.

You can try encreasing the multiplier at stock voltage and when you reach instability start with voltage i as small steps as possible.

Yes, but bare in mind a 212 evo is not the best cooler out there so this will limit your ability to reach really high OCs - you should easily be able to reach 4.2Ghz on an 6600k though. Good luck!
