So after much fault diagnosis I need a new CPU. As per below spec is what I had and was happy to run games such as Fallout 4 full so not really needing much more. The motherboard and PSU are new and the graphics card only 11 months so don't want to buy them again.

AMD FX-4170 4.2ghz
GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3P
Cooler Master RR-212E CPU cooler
Corsair 600W PSU
MSI NVIDIA Gtx 960
2x 8GB DDR3 Ram
Samsung 1TB hard disk
Standard CD drive
Win 10 64 bit

Not wanting to spend a fortune, so recommendations would be appreciated!

Seeing as you're using a great quality motherboard & have a 212 evo too then stick to the fx6300,8300,8320,8320e - whichever you can get at the best price for yourself.

Any if those chips can be overclocked very easily to 4.2-4.4ghz with your current components.
Don't pay extra for an 8350 or 8370 .

the fx 6300 is the minimum to play good games at good framerates at 1080p

if you can go higher, the 8350 or 8370 are alot better, thanks to more cores and higher clockspeed, i think those have more cache than the 6300

if you are planning on editing videos, the 8350 is the minimum i would go it is a bit more expensive but is worth the price i think

the 8370 comes with wraith cooler so you won't need the aftermarket cooler ujnless you find the wraith cooler too noisy
