What should i upgrade in my Gaming PC to improve the performance the most ?

Specs: AMD FX 6300 six-core proccesor.

12GB of RAM

Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070

GA-78LMT-USB3 MotherBoard

I feel like my system isnt running as well as i thought. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well everything is awesome, except that CPU. It's holding you back. AMD's chips are not meant to handle gaming, until Ryzen is release (maybe). If you want to upgrade, grab yourself a Haswell or Skylake chip to gain benefit. If your RAM is DDR3, stick with Haswell.

What's your budget?

Not much you can do at this point, and you do not want to spend money on a dead platform.

2 Options
Wait for Ryzen to drop, see real world benchmarks, and then decide if AMD or Intel fits with what you want and then a new build.

Upgrade to Skylake now, don't build on Haswell just to save your DDR3, Skylake gives you an upgrade platform.

As stated by Herc08, what's your budget?

I would like to stay under $300 if possible

$300 for the whole system, or for a motherboard, CPU, RAM upgrade?

$300 for the cpu and motherboard , so i would need new ram as well if i was to upgrade the motherboard/cpu?

It is recommend to go to Skylake to get the best performance right now. Even with Kaby Lake drops, you will still have a chip that is powerful enough to do what you need to do for every day computing. Here is a combo set you can use. If $17 is too much, you can drop down to either 8GB or a i3-6100. Hopefully not, because dropping down could hamper performance.
