GTX 1080 Not Performing As Expected

Hi everyone!

Just got a new GTX1080 for Christmas. It's definitely a beast, but I'm seeing higher FPS from benchmarks and videos around the interwebs. Even at 1440p, I feel like I shouldn't be down around 60-80 FPS so often.

Attached is a screenshot of Afterburner monitoring during a normal round of BF1 - 64 player conquest. 1440p Ultra settings. Nothing else running in the background. My CPU usage is pretty high, but my CPU is listed as not bottlenecking a 1080.

Any ideas?

System:

Gigabyte ga-z87-hd3
i7-4770k @ stock 3.5GHz
Zotac GTX 1080 Amp Edition
24GB DDR3 1600
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 500GB
Acer XB270HU 144Hz IPS G-Sync

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Yep, the CPU usage % is high (fluctuates between 60-90% across all cores) but not dimed. Is it normal for the GPU usage % to be significantly less than 100% while gaming? Would the CPU usage need to be 100% to assume there's a bottleneck going on here?

According to previous threads on toms hardware, 90% CPU usage could be considered a bottleneck. Like I said, try overclocking it if you haven't already, it may reduce the bottle neck.

Gotcha. Good to know. Thank you for your time!

If I could overclock with my current stock fan, I certainly would. But it's about as hot as I'd want it to get. I'd have to buy a better cooler, which may be money spent on something that doesn't end up making a difference. It'd also take away money from the pool if I end up having to upgrade CPU + mobo + RAM.

I still find it really weird that:

(A) The bottlenecking thread rates the i7-4770k + GTX 1080 as a good pair with no bottlenecking.

(B) The GPU never went balls out even when the CPU usage was down in the 50-80% range.

It sure feels like I'm not getting the full power out of my GTX 1080 for some reason. Temps seem normal hovering at 65C. Are there any other common culprits that would keep a GPU from using its potential?

Here's a CPU-Z system spec page if it's any help.

Got some interesting new info.

You can see in this graph where the GPU usage % was low like it was before, then immediately started using the full power of the GTX 1080 as soon as I changed settings to 150% resolution scaling.

This makes me think my CPU can handle it, the GPU just isn't using it's full potential until it's asked to do more. I don't understand why it isn't pumping out as many FPS as it can all the time? BF1 vsync is off and framerate limiter is set to 200. Any ideas why my 1080 is lazy?

As a side note, between my first post and this post, I changed NVIDIA Control Panel > 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings > Power Management Mode to Prefer Maximum Performance. It didn't seem to improve GPU usage % while running at the regular 1440p 100% resolution scaling.

I'm testing the less-demanding Overwatch now.

Overwatch test results at 1440p Epic settings. Averaged between 110-120 FPS as expected. Didn't use the full GPU usage, though the 80-90% usage was higher than BF1. The part where the GPU usage goes up to 97% was in the menu. Which is weird in and of itself.

I'm at a loss here. Any ideas why the GPU isn't using its full potential except when I use resolution scaling to push it past 1440p?

Rainbow 6 Siege at 1440p Ultra settings. GPU hovered between 80-90%, CPU between 80-90%.

Still doesn't explain why my GPU isn't being used in BF1 until I turn on 150% resolution scaling, frequently while my CPU isn't dimed. I'm pretty positive I should be getting more than avg 70 FPS in BF1 at 1440p Ultra.

Witcher 3 at 1440p Ultra, no hairworks. Averaged around 70FPS regardless of city or country. GPU usage was up around 95% while out in the countryside, around 85% while in town. CPU usage was all over the place but generally much lower than BF1, Overwatch and RB6. Nowhere near maxed.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why some games utilize 95% of GPU while others like BF1 use only 60-80% of the GPU's power. Or why a cityscape in Witcher would utilize less than 90%+ of the GPU to improve framerates as much as possible. It's like something is telling it to hold back.
