Yo Whassuh?!
Long time reader, first post! I am new to PC building and need some help troubleshooting my rig. I built it in September 2015 with no particular games in mind, but have since enjoyed Skyforge and am currently playing TERA. My objective was an overclockable, budget build with upgradeability.

System specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium g3258 3.2 GHz unlocked Anniversary edition
MOBO: ASUS TUF GRYPHON Z97 LGA1150 DDR3 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Intel Z97 mATX
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0+ 4GB GDDR5 256bit, DVI-I, DVI-D, HDMI
HD: Crucial BX100 250GB SATA 2.5 Inch Internal Solid State Drive - CT250BX100SSD1
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120mm PWM Fan
PSU: Corsair CX Series 500 Watt ATX/EPS Modular 80 PLUS Bronze ATX12V/EPS12V 456 Power Supply CX500M
Mem: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3 1600 (PC3-12800) 240-Pin UDIMM Memory
Wireless: NETGEAR AC1200 Wi-Fi USB Adapter High Gain Dual Band USB 3.0

I was running Windows 10 but just wiped my system to try Linux after clearing(w/guru) and reinstalling NVIDIA driver with no improvement. I couldn't get a wireless driver to work so I wiped again and installed windows 8.1 which is working a little better than 10(driver stops and sometimes recovers on 8.1/doesn't recover ever on 10).

In a nutshell the computer runs high graphics fast and smooth under significant demand (instance boss fights) without stuttering or anything, but seemingly at random it will crash or freeze. Often I get an "Nvidia Driver has stopped working" error ("application has been blocked from accessing hardware" on Windows 10). Equally probable is a complete freeze where the game stays up, the computer becomes unresponsive, my fans speed up for a few seconds and then slow way down until I manually turn off the pc.

The computer has crashed this way ever since I put it together, it does not appear to be worsening. It seems to crash less frequently with the CPU overclocked, but that's probably just my imagination, it crashes at default and overclocked settings. I've tinkered with it a ton. I've always thought I got a dud G3258 chip since I am only able to achieve a 4.1GHz overclock at around 1.320 Adaptive offset Core Voltage. My CPU temps peak in TERA around 68C, however I have not viewed temps as the system crashes. I use the Asus Bios.

Whelp thanks for reading. I really appreciate any input I might receive here. I am looking to spend a little more on the system. I always intended on upgrading the CPU, but if the problem exists elsewhere in the system I don't want to spend on something outdated and defective anyhow.

Solution
Do you have another GPU you could try? The error you are having is often heat related, and while the GPU itself may seem fine, that doesn't mean the VRM's are not overheating, which will also cause that issue and do not show up on monitors. If you could try another GPU, it would help rule out the rest of your system.

I download the Drivers either from GeForce Experience or a couple times by Steam maybe. I do believe it crashes and freezes consistently with all BIOS settings at default.

I require specific instructions to upload small dmp files. I found many files with "dmp" in them.

Could be the video drivers. Download the EVGA video drivers. Uninstall the video drivers you installed.

Once you get the EVGA drivers install them select custom,. And tick clean install.

Only tick the drivers and HDMI. Untick the others. You dont need them

So I went to EVGA to download the drivers and found myself, once again, downloading the NVidia Geforce Experience. Symptoms still present after cleaning and reinstallation of the driver.

Still wondering how I can remedy these system crashes. It seems like any upgrading might as well start with a new chipset for how dated my mobo has become. I'd rather not expend the resources for sure, but I cannot really get serious with any games with these crashes always lurking.
