I have a pair of astro a40 tr and can't use the surround sound as my motherboard (asus z97e) doesn't have an optical port.

I'm looking for a sound card for around $50-$100 which will work well with my headset and has an optical port. I'm using this only for gaming so I don't need a card with music mixing (or something along those lines as I'm clueless when it comes to sound). I have looked myself but I'm confused as to what I should be looking at. If anyone could point me in the right direction that would

The Astro A40's only have two physical drivers in the cans, one in each cup of the headset. If you do end up going for the optical input you're only going to get a virtual upmixing since there really isn't a 7.1 driver setup in the two ear cups of the headset. If you do want true surround, you should look into the Razer Tiamat Headset which works off of the analog 7.1 connections on your soundcard(dedicated or onboard).

You can look into Asus' Xonar DGX but I think you should read through this and this.
