Format Taking A Long Time, Drive Burning Up?

Is my WD 1 TB MyPassport Burning up?

I got it today. Tried plugging it into an XP SP3 64bit machine. Kind of picked up the drive, no drive letter. Showed up to eject though.

Converted to MBR, from GPT, on windows 7 machine. No idea I had to do that, looked online after drive didn't work. Box says 7,8, 10 compatible

Went through the simple volume wizard, assigned a letter. Seemed fine, also 7 machine picked up the drive. So hopefully no drive problems?

But I decided to be thorough, and formatted on the XP machine.

Taking forever! After 20 minutes only 4 of those green bars, less than 1/4 of the way across! Drive is a little hot to the touch, not much.

I set it on a cable, air can move underneath.

Should I cancel the format? Drive ruined if I do that? Or let it go?

Is it going to burn up or something? Any other suggestions or thoughts?

Solution
I checked the drive again, after about 3 hours, and it wasn't hot, like I thought it would be. Giving it some space underneath seemed to help, it cooled down. Seemed cooler than after 20-30 minutes

I went home, but it seemed like it took about 4 hours to complete the format. Can these small, portable drives run for that amount of time? They don't seem to have fans like the MyBooks used to.

I did the quick test, and the drive passed. Once the time settled down on the long scan, it was over 8 hours. So I aborted, I hate running a drive hours on end, it seems like it might cause it to fail.

The format was done long before I came back this morning, so I tried copying at pasting to it. No problem so far. Accessed, processed images, no...

Wondering if there's a better way to use this drive on xp? Than how I did it?

Was converting to mbr necessary? The one I got last year was fine.

Also I deleted the software etc. on the drive before converting :/

Any thoughts or suggestions ?

Hi there OutdoorMike,

That is really unpleasant. :(

As you've tried converting, formatting, etc., I assume that there's not data stored on the drive. Am I right?

If this is the case, I would suggest you to test the drive, as there's a chance that it is failing. You can do so if you run both short and extended DLG tests on it: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=ZjxxMz

Is the drive under warranty?

Let me know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

Is switching from GPT to MBR going to stress the drive or something and cause problems?

I checked, and the MyPassport that is almost full is MBR. Got it last year . I got the new one yesterday

It's great you've sorted this out.

Yeah, the portable drives can run for that amount of time. They are designed in such a way, that they don't really require extra cooling.

If the drive is in a healthy state, as it seems, the extended DLG test shouldn't damage it.

Nope. Switching from GPT to MBR is not something that should cause problems.

Cheers,
