This computer is from 2011

Cpu: Intel Core i3-2120 (its not the one with 4 cores)
it has 2 cores and 4 threads.

Tell me how good it is
Tell me what it is similar to

Update: Tell is it worth upgrading to fx-6300

Zen may or may not lower prices, but it can't hurt to wait and see. I don't think AMD, which is on the edge of financial ruin, will start a price war with a company that has 13 billion in cash reserves. Capitalism should see that Zen is priced around where it performs relative to the dominant market force, which is Intel.

You're not going to find a cheaper upgrade than an i5 that fits your current motherboard. It's literally the next step up from what you have. An FX-6300 is more of a side-grade, it's almost 5 years old now too and wasn't a great CPU when it was new.
Intel's CPU line in a nutshell:

Celeron/Pentium - 2 cores, 2 threads
i3 - 2 cores, 4 threads
i5 - 4 cores, 4 threads
i7 4+ cores, 8+ threads

Your CPU is a 2nd generation CPU, denoted by the "2". 7th generation chips are currently being released, and are probably in the range of 50% faster. Your CPU isn't really like anything but another Core i3.

Why do you ask?

EDIT: Upgrading to an FX-6300 is a poor idea. Better to find a CPU that fits your current motherboard, rather than "upgrade" to a CPU that's just as old and requires that you replace your motherboard too.

i have a ddr3 motherboard i dont feel like upgrading my board to ddr4 because its a bit more expensive, i am upgrading my pc soon and im waiting for new cpu to come out so the cost of better ones can get cheaper.

Edit:

I'm going to get a 1050 ti so i need a good cpu for it 80-100 dollars

A lot of people said fx-6300 was fine with the 1050ti as long as you overclock it, I kinda want my pc upgrade very soon, i don't feel like waiting for Ryzen

<language edited by moderator> Compared to the 6100

I'm not going to keep my 2120, I actually though it was a good cpu

The FX-6300 is also terrible compared with an i3 6100. My opinion: buy an i5 3570 on eBay and put it in your current motherboard. It will be considerably faster and cheaper than buying a new motherboard along with the FX CPU. The FX line is dead and gone, and absolutely not worth buying in 2016.

i just want a budget build not a expensive one, i don't play games like the witcher 3 and game with advanced graphics like that. I might just wait for zen so prices can go down.
