Hello,

So, as you could tell by the title this is my first build ever, and I want to make sure everything is right and everything fits well. So I ask you all, what do you think about this build? Is it good for overclocking? Will it last long because I would really like if it will? And also your opinion on overclocking and is it safe? Lots of question :) Build : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/y4gZWX Note: Cooler in the build isn't for overclocking, as i don't plan on doing it yet. I will buy a new one maybe in a year or so when games get more demanding and I start overclocking. I hope rest of the build is good for it. Thank you all in advance.

Solution
It's not a bad build. However, some improvements can be made. You say is it good for overclocking, yet the cooler isn't meant for it. Why not pony up a few more dollars (literally a few) and grab a Cryorig H7 or Hyper 212 EVO? Also that PSU is a bit overkill. You can get away with 550 watts or even 500. Even if you upgraded to another GPU, that PSU would still be overkill. Just some ways to save money. Also, I believe there are some cheaper SSDs that still devlier on performance.

Solution
Also, did you already buy 8GB of ram? I would strongly suggest getting 16GB. Here is a starting point for you. the reason it is higher is because your list stated that you already purchased RAM, so I added ram for $85. If you remove it, you will see the savings.

This is a solid build overall. If you are already spending over 1100 dollars on this build, why not pay in advance for a nicer cooler? Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of overclocking, as I don't think the little extra performance is worth the money. Like Herc08 said, the PSU is a bit overkill, you could get a lower wattage and use the money you saved from that to purchase a nicer CPU cooler. Happy building!

New triple A games coming out take up a LOT of space. If it were me, i'd prefer to install these games on my SSD boot drive. If you looking for a computer that will last a long time (would like to install more than 1-2 games on your boot drive) i'd highly consider a 1tb solid-state drive as your boot drive. An example would be DOOM and Gears of War 4, taking up 80gigs of capacity on my ssd each! I also agree with other comments listed above that you should go with 16gb as a MINIMUM of system memory and if you are only running one graphics card, a 500w psu is more than plenty.

Thank you for your reply.

I just wanted to ask you will the Hyper 212 EVO do well with the build until I buy a cooler for overclocking and start doing it?

You see my setup in my sig? That CPU is rated at 3.5 GHz, I have a stable overclock with 4.4Ghz, and it stays below 50 C under load. So yeah, I recommend the 212 EVO for keeping your CPU cool and overclocking.

Thank you for another reply. Just one more question. What are the risks of overclocking a CPU, if there are any, and would it decrease CPUs lifetime?

Well the K version of a CPU is designed to be overclocked. Risks? Well, let's say it's rated at 3.5Ghz, and you try to push it to 6.3Ghz, then you can risk it being fried because it's a bit too much to handle. It's all about trial and error. You basically change your multiplier, test it, if it is stabled, try to bump it up. If not it is not stabled, take it down a notch. It's not something done quickly. Just try not to get too greedy. You most likely will not notice the difference between 4.2 and 4.4Ghz. A lot of people doing for bragging rights. I've attached a guide to this post for a more in-depth conversation.

Thanks for that. I also wanted to ask you what do you think about my cheaper build that I will maybe take instead of more expensive one I showed you: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rzv2jc
I don't plan on OCing on this build. I went for Z170 motherboard if I decide to upgrade to some unlocked CPU in future.

It's not bad, but either you can save $30 and get the same performance witht eh 6500, or spend $10-15 more and get the K version and have it to overclock. No need to have the 6600, cooler, and a Z170 when you are literally a Hamilton and Lincoln away from taking full advantage.
