hi everyone! i am trying to migrate away from windows for the sole purpose of them acting as big brother, i know it might some silly to some of you but that is my reasoning lol. so i would like to install linux on the gaming rig i built. it has an asusz-87 pro gamer mobo, an sad and regular TB hd, gtx 960 4gb gpu. do you think it will be able to install without issues ? another reason for this possible choice is, although a rookie seeing how this is my first pc i built, a certain curiosity is being sparked in learning a nitty gritty os lol. i am sure most of you can relate to my second reason!!! anything thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated :) also, points/opinions if i should even make the switch in the first place ! thanks again :)

You'll have to accept that you won't be able to play Overwatch. I think your privacy concerns are overestimated, but that's just my opinion. I run Linux for development work and Windows for games.

As a development platform you can't better Linux.
Ubuntu is likely easiest to start with.

You will need support. Look to SpiceWorks and other technical sights, Tom's is great in general, not hard core specifics. I support both Linux types, Ubuntu and CENTOS.

Lots of the stuff is best done by command line, quicker that way as well.

You'll need to be good at finding the correct answer that works for you when searching too.

I disagree with your "Windows as Big Brother" but I respect your decision.

Don't fully commit and jump into Linux without some backup, Meaning, keep Windows and dual boot into Linux.

Should you run into any issues, a working Windows PC beats nothing. Ubuntu is a good way to start.

As McHenryB is getting at, gaming will most likely be a letdown in Linux. Unless you are like me, my favorite games are the Valve titles (CS, Half-Life, Portal) so I'm happy without Windows.

I always end up going back to Linux Mint, specifically the KDE version.

Why don't you share a bit about what you do with your computer typically, any specific software you must have?

although i initially built it for gaming, i only play diablo2 and overwatch lol. just nothing else grasping my interest so far and busy with work so no time to shop for games. I'm honestly only worried about overwatch not working.

you disagree because it is not true? please elaborate as other than me wanting to learn something else, that is a huge reason for wanting to migrate !

really don't use the rig i built for anything specific specific lol. it was built one day out of boredom as an experiment :p i will only miss overwatch tbh

Unless you write your own OS, Applications, and don't use the internet or watch cable tv, your privacy is already at risk. MS does what everyone else does, gather data to make better business decisions (though some other companies sell that data).

Yes MS admitted recently the messed up with all the questionable privacy settings but you can actually fix all those things rather easily.

Check this out - http://www.techradar.com/how-to/computing/how-to-fix-windows-10-privacy-issues-1309424

Privacy as we knew it before no longer exists unfortunately. It is what it is and i've just chosen to deal with it, not that I'm happy with it.

Again, I was not knocking your decision in any way, and I totally respect it, but I like to game, I like to use Google, and my Gmail, I like to even check out my Facebook once in a while, all these things make me give up some privacy in return for using them.

Facebook and Google are especially bad with the bulk collection and selling of your data. Microsoft is making windows a 24/7 advertising machine. Of course you give up some privacy for convenience but that does not mean everyone has to.

Didn't feel knocked in any way buddy! But yea what you are saying makes a lot of sense ! I will do some more thinking regarding this. I mean, I like windows but also being intrigued by Linux. I appreciate your .02 :)

Happy to share. By the way it wouldn't hurt to play with Linux, it can be fun just like all new things.
