Greetings all,

My 4 yo Gateway FX6860-UR20P is now experiencing the dreaded BSOD (w/ blinking underscore). I think I've tried every fix the internet has to offer including creating a new Windows 10 install usb drive which, unfortunately is not BIOS but UEFI. I am now on the "remove the installation media, restart your computer and insert your install media" hamster wheel which,
obviously, means this will not work either.

I've decided to buy a new HD and try installing Windows 10 on it as a last resort and then seeing if I can recover my photos and docs from the old one, reformatting it and using it as a secondary drive. I received my copy of Windows 10 as a free upgrade from Microsoft but wonder if reloading it fresh onto the new drive will now force me to buy it or will it be recognized through the mobo somehow as the same machine in which it was installed?

I'm also wondering if I should install a SSD instead and download and install Windows 10 on there and simply use that to boot up from.

Any thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated.

So long as you don't change the motherboard, where Microsoft says is where the licence key is stored, then you're not going to experience any issues. SSD's would be significantly faster than a mechanical HDD but if that is the route you want to recreate your bootable USB installer for Windows 10 and then try installing it onto your system. Mind you, I'm assuming your motherboard BIOS is up to date and you've seen no issues with Windows 10 on your prebuilt system?

For future reference, always backup your critical data in case something goes wrong.
