Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
AMD FX-8320 at 3.5 GHz
8 GB DDR3
MSI 760GMA-P34(FX) (MS-7641)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
1 TB HDD

I've looked around a lot but I found multiple contradicting answers on this question. Can I safely OC my CPU to 4.0 GHz with this motherboard?

Solution
A bit too hot hot for the FX-8320. Maximum operating temperature: 61.1°C

The aluminum brick cooler is only a 95W TDP cooler. If you are going to take the FX-8320 to the 125W FX-8350 specs, you will need the 4-heat pipe cooler minimum. Or better yet, a solid aftermarket cooler. Do not run the FX-8320 above stock clocks with that stock cooler.

You must have gotten that FX-8320 w/o a cooler. I believe the factory packs the 125W cooler with it.

What did you do to OC, just raise the multiplier?

If this is your board: https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/760GMA-P34-FX.html#hero-overview
...it isn't really designed for serious OC'ing. Low phase power and no heat sink on the VRMs for a couple things. Once you start increasing the performance of the CPU, the wattage will rise. OC at your own risk.

Since the board handles the 125W CPUs like the FX-8350, I suggest trying for that clock speed as your max. And keep an eye on the temps. Be sure you have a high quality PSU as well. Cheapies tend to have high ripple and can damage themselves and the rest of the system.

The PSU will be fine for that. The stock cooler, maybe. Which cooler comes with the FX-8320, the one with the 4 heat pipes or the little aluminum brick?

It is the aluminum brick, I went ahead and boosted it to 4 GHz. It booted fine then I ran the Prime95 stress test for 30 mins, the max temp was 70C.
