CPU upgrade options?

I am currently using an i5-3570k CPU and am looking to upgrade to something fairly high end with a budget of no more than $400 USD. My MOBO a z-77 extreme 4 so I would like to stick with something that is compatible.

This is where you fine folks come in...any suggestions on which one you guys like/dislike or if there is a new series or architecture coming out worth waiting on?

I7-3790K with an overclock would be the best you can do on the same motherboard.

If your need for cpu is for gaming, then do not bother. Your 3570K will perform just as well, particularly if you overclock.
Most games use no more than 2-3 threads so the extra I7 hyperthreads of a i7-3790K will not be hardly used at all.

If your need is for multithreaded batch applications, then a I7 of some sort would be good.

Your only real upgrade from your 3570K would be a 3790 or 3790K. I personally would wait until you can upgrade your cpu, mobo and ram all at once. Maybe wait and see what the new amd and intel chips are pricewise. You could overclock your 3570K for now to squeeze out some extra performance or upgrade your GPU.

My primary use is gaming but I know a lot of games are CPU reliant but I guess I will look into OC'ing to squeeze more performance out. Can most 3570k's get to 4.0 with little problem? The aftermarket CPU cooler I have listed in my sig is up to date.
