Decided on I7 6700k (vs I5 6600k) for my gaming rig upgrade, worth saving few bucks with a cheaper mobo?

I'm an avid gamer who always wants to play the newest games at high/ultra settings with atleast 60 fps (upgrading monitor in few months also so maybe even 100fps). Leaving the AMD cpu finally since it's bottlenecking my Asus R9 390 pretty bad. I live near Microcenter and they have some killer walk in only deals right now, and since I can get a i7 6700k for $279 I'm just gona step right past the i5 and be ready for more cpu heavy titles now and coming . So with the purchase you also get 30 off any mobo. Since my rig isn't really a show rig (lights, windows, rgb, etc) would going more basic on the mobo be ok? For example Im looking at either a value board like the ASUS H110M-E/M.2 LGA 1151 mATX Intel Motherboard which will run me only $29, or am I losing alot of options comparing to say ASUS Z170-E LGA 1151 ATX Intel Motherboard which will run me $89 w the cpu purchase? Thnx for your responses in advance and if you have any strong opinions as to why the i5 would be fine, I'm listening also. Read alot about the 2 and seems like for the extra 90 the I7 is best bet. P.S. should I be even considering a x99 chipset board?

Solution
NOOOOO! Your CPU requires a specific chipset in order to perform optimally. If you want to overclock the processor and futureproof, you need a Z170 or Z270 chipset.

Thanx for response, makes sense and I would like to be able to OC, whole reason I'm going K version. Now that that's answered, should I even be considering the x99 chipset? The boards cost a good deal more.

x99 will not fit the 6700K, that's for LGA2011v3 CPUs. Also, CorsairSSC is not correct in saying you need a specific chipset, they all perform the same.

That $29 board will work perfectly fine, you're mostly giving up 2 RAM slots and the ability to overclock. Move up to a $60 board (B150) and you can get 4 RAM slots, and up to a $90 board (Z170) and you gain the ability to OC. Since you're already buying a "K" CPU, which necessitates buying an aftermarket cooler, I'd say there's an argument to be made to just pony up the extra $60 for a Z170-based board, but it's entirely up to you. Overclocking generally only returns 5-15% extra performance, which is often below the threshold of what people can perceive.

Whats your time frame on the upgrade? AMD is coming out with their new Ryzen processors, that could blow away what Intel is offering right now. At the very least it may be worth waiting to see what they do for prices. Expected ETA of Q1 2017.

The x99 boards are for different cpu's entirely. Not the 6700k, instead you're looking at the 5820k, 5960x, 6800k etc. I7's with 6, 8 or 10 cores and those cpu's start around $350-400 and quickly go up from there. Z170 boards will allow you to overclock your 6700k.

Once you've decided on a board with the chipset (ie z170) you need then it boils down to other features. Do you want or need wifi built in, how many fan headers it has, is the first pcie slot close to the cpu socket or is there a pci slot above it giving you more clearance for air coolers if that's the route you're going and so on.

Technically you could run the 6700k on the h110-e board you mentioned but you wouldn't be able to overclock it. The h110-e board only has 2 ram slots and supports up to 32gb of ram, the z170e has 4 ram slots and supports up to 64gb of ram. The h110 doesn't support crossfire or sli, the z170 supports both. The h110 has fewer sata headers. Likely has less fan headers for case fans. It doesn't officially support memory faster than ddr4 2133, the z board does. So yes there are a number of differences, those are just a few. They may use different audio chips and a variety of other things also.

I've read alil about the Ryzen cpu's but I've tried the amd side of things before to save a few bucks and 2 years into pc gaming (consoler before) I'm having to ditch 1 and it's mobo to get the fullest from games. The new ryzen might be great but we already know the i7 is great. I just wanna buy something I know will be great for the couple years.

Ryzen was suggested because you mentioned an Intel X99 chipset motherboard, and Ryzen will beat Intel CPUs for the X99 motherboard.
