USB port on a wireless router - what can it control?

Hello,

I've recently started to get into astrophotography, which requires controlling my DSLR camera and a guide camera (kind of like a web cam) from a computer. In the warmer weather, I didn't mind being outside with my laptop, but now that the temperatures are a bit colder, I'm trying to see if I can find a way to keep my laptop (and myself) out of the cold a bit more.

With that in mind, I'm wondering what all the USB port on a wireless router can be used for? Specifically - if I got a wireless router that has 2 USB ports, or plugged a small USB hub into the USB port on the hub, should I be able to access 2 cameras plugged into the USB port from inside my house (of course assuming that I'm within range of my wireless network / that my inside network picks up the USB router outside)?

Or is the USB port on a router strictly for connecting a hard drive?

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer :)

This depends quite a bit on the router and the firmware on the the router. Generally speaking, the USB ports are just for hard drives / flash drives and sometimes printers on nicer routers.

Cameras and such, no. At least not on any that I've come across.
