I want to transfer my OS (everything) from my 1 tb HDD which has 225gb space used, to my SSD which has 250gb (Samsung Evo 850) unallocated 232.76gb. I'm going to use migration tool that is given to me. bios already set to ACHI

Question #1 In my bios do i need to change the main boot (which is my HHD) to the SSD (once the migration has finished) what else do i need to do in my bios?

Question #2 Do i need to disconnect my HHD if so, when?

My bios i use is Gigabyte and it goes to the uefi dual bios achi - no clue, THANKS SO MUCH!! <3

Hi there Swift Magic,

Well, you will need to adjust the boot order, so the SSD is the first boot option. Or, you can try to just switch places of both.

You don't need to take the HDD out. Yet, I believe it will not hurt to take it out, so you can make sure your system boots just fine with just the SSD attached. Then, you can put the HDD back in and reformat it.

Cheers,
D_Know_WD :)

225GB used space, 250GB SSD.
You need to trim down that used space just a little. You want it under 200GB for this to work properly.

These steps, in order:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.
Delete the original boot partitions, here:

-----------------------------

if the hhd is disconnected, do i have it as boot option 2 or have 1 and 2 as SSD? also, if i only have C drive HHD and SSD, do i need to disconnect. also, at the moment the SSD is unallocated, is that ok? and how do i know if my HHD to connected by SATA? can i use the sata cable that i'm using now for the SSD?

To clone, you obviously need both drives connected.
Have only those 2 drives connected.
When the clone operation finishes, power off
Disconnect the old HDD
Connect the SSD to that same SATA port as the HDD was.
Power up, and it should boot up from the new SSD.

1 Download Samsung Migration tool - 2 clone the HHD to SSD, 3 power off 4 disconnect HHD and put the power cable from the HHD to the SSD and i suppose i'll use the SATA cable that came with the HHD and then i'll reboot, go into my gigabyte dualbios (already in ACHI mode) change the Boot #1 to the SSD and ALSO boot #2 as SSD and then it should load up as SSD, now that I my SSD is the C Drive, can i put the SATA cords back to how they were? and plug the HHD sata cables back into the original spot? THANKS SO Much :) <3 Happy new year

So, just to make sure, I NEED to use the SATA cable and the SATA power FROM the HHD to the SSD? no matter if the SSD already has SATA cable of its own?

Plus I have the Samsung Solid State Drive One-stop Install Navigator Manual & Sofrware Version 4.5
will that have the Migration tool on it?

During the cloning operation, the HDD and the SSD each need a power cable from the PSU, and a SATA data cable to the motherboard.

The Samsung Data Migration might be on that DVD.
If not, you can download it here: http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools.html

One more thing bro, when i go into the Gigabyte dualbios after the migration, it's auto set up as ACHI, so do i need to change Boot #1 as SSD NOT HHD and same with the priority boot? what will be boot 2? what else do i need to do in bios?

and you say
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button

is that for the samsung migration tool?

+ my SSD at the moment is online BUT UNallocated is that a big deal? ALSO does my SSD have to be MBR or GPT? i have it to GPT

1. SSD as first in the boot order

2. Yes, in the Samsung tool as well

3. Unallocated is fine. The clone thing will do what it needs

4. GPT

Just start it up. See what happens.
If you run into any errors, then come back here.

omg, what i must of done, I must of taken the SATA cable from the DVD/CD drive and put that as the ssd, i don't have any other SATA cable to connect both, so should i just download it or is the disk more helpful?

You can download the Samsung tool and install it, or reconnect the DVD and install it from the disk.
Either way.

ok, it's transfer BUT when i go into local C drive and go properties and then hardware, the name is the HHD not the SSD, how do i set it up on the computer now? i only have the ssd installed and it booted fine, didn't even need to change my bio, auto did it

maybe because i plugged in the exact cords that were from the HHD to the SSD? SATA CABLE AND POWER

What do you mean "the name" ?
You can change that.

the name is the name of the HHD NOT the SSD. now that it worked algood, can i unplug the SATA CABLEs that i used for the SSD now and put them back where they were and then add the HHD???

The 'name' can be changed.
The cloning operation copied everything, exactly.
Including the Volume name.

As for the cables?
You now have 3 drives.
SSD
HDD
DVD

How many cables do you have?
2 or 3?

Presumably, you wish to continue using the SSD as your boot drive?
So you obviously have to leave that one connected.

I used the same SATA cords for the HHD which is in the HHD spot now lol, can i move it back to where my SSD sits and use those SATA cables? i need to buy 1 more sata cable to connect the DVD

and then i plug the HHD cable back to where that goes and also i'll go into my bios and make sure SSD is #1 + the HHD is #2 bootup

Power off
Disconnect the SATA data cable from the HDD
Power on

Does it boot from the SSD?

If so, then leave the SSD connected where it is.

Or, you can start switching cables around in different ports until it fails to boot up.

The HHD is disconnected and it's now in the place where to HHD was, and it boots up as SSD

i just want my HHD to be connected again but booting up with SSD, catch my drift? :p
