Something about CPU voltages

So I've overclocked my i3 540 at 3.6 ghz, but I never touched the voltages because I was scared it could do something bad. I want to know what would happen if I increased those voltages? Will my CPU temperatures lower down or will my PSU just explode?
I have a 550 watt with a 9800 GT graphics card

If it's stable without changing voltage there;'s no need.

Upping voltage with a system that old may be risky, but usually it'd just shut down if errors occur. Temps wont go up though. That'd only happen when increasing clockspeed.

You could push it further probably, but no voltage doesnt affect temps on its own.

Have we verified max safe voltage for this cpu?

Don't go higher than 1.4 volts.
