I like the am3 chipset. I have my processor picked out but keep read about the 970 not being ideal for gaming. That the 990 is the way to go but it's kinda out of my budget. Please help me to understand the difference between the 990 and 970.
Also can I use the 970 for gaming.
The highest game is arma 3.

The top of the line chipset is the 990FX. But you won't find a decent board with that chipset for $80 new. The Asrock Extreme3 is the lowest priced 990FX chipset board I can think of, but it is ~$110. My Asrock Extreme6 is $130. You've probably already checked out Newegg, but here are their 990FX boards: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007625%20600138080%20600166242%20600165296&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=36
I presume your case accepts ATX boards. Btw, what CPU will you be using?

Wikipedia has a pretty good comparison of the 9-series chipsets: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_900_chipset_series

It really depends on the rest of the motherboard that the chipset is attached to. Which board are you considering?
And what have you heard about the 970 not being good for gaming? The main performance difference I can see is the slightly slower Hyper Transport speed. 2400 MHz vs 2600 MHz

What is your max budget for the board, and are you US based?
