You're going to want to make sure it is capable of unlocking that Thuban, whatever you get.
You for sure have a latent L3 cache and possibly 2 extra cores.
You'll want to get an AM3 or AM3+ board that advertises unlocking as a feature.

Your Athalon 640 is actually a better, more powerful CPU, but with those features locked up.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but there is always a chance your quad core unlocks into a penta or a hex core and gets some more cache. all you need to know about that is - it will be faster haha.
Your CPU will work in any AM3 or AM3+ board - that is the type of socket. You'll want to make sure it advertises being able to do a core unlock as a feature. Pretty sure most 970 and 990FX board are going to be able to do that.

so i can actually buy new AM3 motherboard ? or AM 3 + i was having a AM 2+ mb but it died i didnt baked it im sure it will fix it but i need 8gb ram support and better sound output...i never heard that hidden features of athlon II 640 x4 idk
