first off, sorry if the questions are retarded xD, I'm a noob

story:
> started noticing low performance and high disk usage in the task manager
> performed about 15 clean windows installations in 2 days because new nvidia drivers woud freeze every time I try to install it
> the performance began to drop significantly
> tried to performe another clean windows installation and failed every time it would freeze at copying files or the step after it
> booted linux and found this

some questions I have:
1- is reallocated sector = bad sector?
2- why does S.M.A.R.T say that the 500 reallocated sectors are alot and that the disk is failing? aren't there over 1 billion sectors in a 700GB HDD (512 b/sector)?
3- after some research on that error I found that the HDD should be replaced. is that true?
4- what should I do to prevent such a fail in the future?

NOTE: the laptop fall twice before once it was off and another it was on

Solution
1) Pretty much yes. they are sectors going bad and it was ABLE to recover the data and Reallocated it to a backup sector.

2) Because even 1 reallocated sectors is a sign that more may follow. Having more than a few hundreded reallocated will make the drive run VERY slow.

3) yes replace it ASAP

4) You can't. These are hardware defects. I find Western Digital drives to last longer than most other drives that or get a SSD.

Oh yea and having a hard drive fall, especially when it is on, can really do some damage. Head hit the platters, you get damaged heads, bad sectors, or a totally busted HDD.
Physical shock is always hard on a HDD, and can shorten life.
If S.M.A.R.T says that there are a large number of reallocated sectors and the drive is failing, then you can bet the drive is failing. It is time to get as much of your data off that drive and replace it with a new drive.
To prevent future failures, Don't drop your laptop!
