Hey, I just bought a new ram card, of 8gb, I was looking to buy one, and my friend told me that it doesn't matter if it's a different brand, one is Hyper X and the other one is Xpg, they have exactly they are exactly the same, except that they are a different brand. (Hyper X is the one I already had) Well, so when I put the new card (Xpg) in the slot next to the old one (Hyper X) the computer just restarts automatically after like 1 second every time it turns on. I tried getting the old ram (Hyper X) out, and put only the new ram (Xpg), and it also just starts and then restarts. Can anyone tell me what the problem is? Am I installing it incorrectly?

Solution
If the problem persists when only that one new stick of RAM is installed, then that stick is faulty and should be returned/exchanged.

It's hard to install RAM incorrectly. There is a notch between the pins that is off-center, so it only goes in one way. So long as the RAM is seated and the retention clips are locked, it's fine.

And indeed, you don't need to match brands. RAM speed, timings, and voltage need to be identical for best compatibility/performance. So long as that's all matching, you shouldn't have an issue. Unless, of course, you get a DOA stick, which it sounds like you may have.
