Hi All.
I'm looking to add another SSD, to compliment the 180Gb boot drive & 1Tb data drive. The problem is that my motherboard is quite old & only supports SATAII. I have 2 spare PCIe slots but there are only 1x.
Does anyone know if the current SSD I have would saturate the SATA bus & if the PCIe 2.0 slot would allow a better total through put even though it is slower on its own?

Solution
the maximum speed reached by the drive on sata 3 is 550 mbs, on sata 2 should be 250 more or less

the sata port will not be affected at all, all you will see is not excellent speeds from the ssd, only good to decent speeds, nothing else

the ssd will not saturate anything

it will copy files at the maximum speed the port allows, around 200mbs, read is the same, 200mbs, sata 3 goes almost to 600mbs

you will only see it run slower than what it could run at, nothing more

While sata 3 sequential speeds are very nice (500MB/s+) the real benefit of an SSD is it's high (compared to an hdd) random speeds which will not saturate the sata2 ports speed. I would look for a high random 4k speed ssd and not worry about the really high sequential rates that you cant get on sata2 anyways.

So are you saying that in this situation SATA II bandwidth with 2 SSD's hanging off it will still be of more benefit that attaching one to the PCIe 2.0 x1 port because the available bandwidth on SATA II will not be a bottlenecked by small file access?
