Bad driver, GPU or PSU?

ive got a problem that just started yesterday. what happens is at random times my PC will brick and my 2 screens will turn into a solid color. every time its a different color. a few times before the color screens there would be a few seconds of red artifacts on the screen before it turns a solid color, now its just instant. when these lock ups happen the reset button on my case doesnt work and i have to switch my power supply off. i reinstalled drivers multiple times. 1: fresh install of the latest. 2: re-install of the latest. 3: rolling back to the Need for Speed game ready 364.51 driver.

Sounds like a failing GPU, its either overheating, or straight up going bad.

had the same thing happen to me a year agp with a Club 3D R9 270
and yep it was failing GPU

well this isnt looking good...i dont have the money for a new GPU. is there anything else i can try?

Check the temperatures if its overheating when its failing you can try and pull the cooler and install new thermal paste and then re-install. Its unlikely but possible.

i know its not over heating because before i pulled it MSI afterburner showed it to be around 50C. something i forgot to add is i have not had it crash during games. only when at the desktop. even when under full load it never passes about 72C because of my custom fan curve that has the fan speed top out at 60%. I Also put new arctic silver 5 on it during the summer so i doubt its bad since this just started yesterday.

If its not heat then its most likely hardware. The driver isn't going to cause this issue.

PSU it would reboot or shut down.

The good new is on the off chance its another issue if you remove your GTX 960 and the issue remains, you know its not your GPU.

However based on what youve shown and said, its unlikely to be anything else.

Right, what do you think i should do, look for another 960 new or used or look at new like the 1050 TI?

I would get a 1050ti or 1060 3gb in that price range, the 960 isn't worth finding new.

Thing is, the 960 had the performance i liked and more. so i dont need more power.
i Think i know what killed my 960 tho. MSI Afterburner used to bug out and move the OC slider to the max but i always caught it and set it back to +0. makes me wonder if it did it again and i didn't catch it.

Good choice. The 1050ti is a little more powerful, and probably cheaper, as the 960 is RARE new. I wouldn't buy a used GPU IMO, not when you can get that for only 130 bucks.
