What components should I be getting for my own in-home NAS system?

I'm a developer who's looking to build a cheap NAS system in my house to mainly just hold my code repositories for which I can access remotely. My question is what components do I need in order to accomplish a complete, in-home NAS system? Is there really much difference between building a NAS system vs setting up a home desktop computer? Any special components I need that I wouldn't typcially get for a home desktop computer?

That I do not know, but I would suspect probably not. Most likely it would need to be installed on the client side but if you're using more than 1 PC to access the NAS that messes that up. It is worth looking into but I doubt it.

Ok so back to your question. A NAS really can be any PC you don't need anything special to be able to do it. IMO build the cheapest thing you can the only things I...

Well I want to install perforce version system control software onto my NAS for which I don't think I can do easily on a prebuilt NAS such as my book or my cloud though I could be wrong.

IMO build the cheapest thing you can the only things I would worry about are getting a good gold efficiency PSU and a NAS or Enterprise hard drive, because they are made to run 24x7. Otherwise the cheapest mothebroard/pentium/etc. I don't have experience with it but you can also avoid windows and run Linux on the thing to save money and overhead there as well.

Ya, from what I saw I don't think it can be done. But thank you for your answer, its what I suspected but wanted to verify with someone before dropping money :)
