My iMac is connected via ethernet. Our building's internet went down today so I tried connecting to my iPhone's mobile hotspot. The hotspot showed as connected but I still couldn't access the internet until I unplugged the ethernet cable.

Anyone know why this happens and how I can fix it so I don't have to unplug my ethernet cable every time I want to connect via hotspot?

On the same token, my iPhone still tries to connect via wifi instead of LTE when the wifi is down.

Stop being so lazy already, just unplug the cable. How often does this happen?

Yes there is an explanation, because otherwise you won't be satisfied. Computers, Smartphones are not so smart. As long as your devices can talk to the next hoop device, in this case the ethernet switch, the WIFI router, they think those paths are up and available! they are not smart enough to go "all the way" and actually try to say hello say to google.com before announcing you have a good Internet connection.

You don't want to unplug a simple cable, go into the ethernet NIC and manually DISABLE the NIC, seems like more work to me.

Smartphone, you have to manually disable WIFI.

Thanks for the explanation. Not really about being lazy though. Just thought there was a setting or something that would make my computer automatically connect to the available internet source.

Kind of sucks about smartphones though. I've forgotten to connect back to wifi before when my internet went down.
