External USB DAC vs USB sound card questions! Are they the same thing?

I'm looking to possibly change from an internal PCI-e sound card to something external. But there's one thing I'm confused about: what the devil is the difference between a USB sound card and an external DAC connected to your PC via USB?

From what I've read, they seem to be the exact same thing. They both take the audio from your PC via USB, process it and convert it from digital to analogue and output it to the connected headphones. And yet, when you look at manufacturer's websites, they list USB sound cards and DACs under separate categories! So what's the difference?

In terms of usage, I simply want something that I can plug my headphones and speakers into that avoids any processing of the audio happening inside the PC. For headphones, that seems to be the domain of a DAC or USB sound card (still not sure of the difference!) but for 5.1 speakers, where are you suppose to plug them in? A PCI-e sound card gives you the green, pink, orange, blue and black plugs that you need, but USB sound cards or DACs don't seem to have them!

For your first part:
Read here.

DAC's are more or less stereo outputs while mutli-channel output on an external sound card can only be found on some expensive units. You're forgetting that when you plug in an USB sound card or DAC all the audio processing takes place at the USB end as opposed to having a dedicated sound card with a chip that does all the processing.

Mind sharing your full system's specs inclusive of your OS and audio equipment?

Ah, I see. So if a DAC has USB input, it's doing the audio processing from your PC and is essentially functioning as an external sound card even if it's not listed under that category?

This is more research for a future mini-ITX build, (hence the need for a non-PCIe sound card solution) so I don't have any exact system specs for you at the moment. A DAC with USB would fit the bill perfectly it seems, with the added benifet of cleaner audio and hi-def audio on some of the higher end models!

Speaking of which, I just found a store that has the MKII version of the Asus EONE on sale for a killer price! It's stereo-only, but it seems to be much higher quality than any of the other USB DACs I've looked at, and I use my headphones more often anyway. If I need 5.1, there's always a Creative external sound card.
