Hello!

I recently found out that it is considered secure to have router as well. Right now I have cable modem Scientific Atlanta 2203, with no router built in.

I am home user, living apartment block. I use cable ethernet internet, no interest in Wi-Fi.
I have two computers I use depending on need: old Windows 7 and Mac Mini.

I have no interest in Wi-Fi and interested in router only because I was given strong advice in getting one for security reasons. Should I get router, I'd like to connect it through cable to modem and to computer, no Wi-Fi involved.

Do I need router? And if yes, what kind would you advise me to get?

1) Is cheaper router less secure?

2) Initial check of the local shops (I live in Europe) shows that routers sold are D-Link, Trendnet, TP-link and Linksys.

Are those companies trustworthy?

I am grateful for any help.

You will probably end up with a wireless router, why ? Because they are cheaper. They mass produce millions of them so the unit cost is lower. If you don't want WIFI just disable it in the user control screens.

D-Link, TP-Link, and Linksys are are reputable manufacturers.

I DO RECOMMEND you get a router. There are 1000s of attempts on every IP address every day. It just takes one new vulnerability that you (or MS) hasn't patched for your system to be compromised. At least with a router, unsolicited network traffic will never get to your computer. It gets stopped at the router.

Is this Scientific Atlanta ISP owned? U maybe able to tell them to give you a gateway instead. Gateway=modem+router+WIFI+4 ports switch, all in one box and you just disable WIFI if you like.

But yeah all those brands you mentioned are legit, any of those will work.

Thank you!
Do those Wi-Fi routers still allow to connect computer to it using a cable then?

And this might sound stupid question, but I need to ask: if one computer is infected and I later use same router for other computer (not at the same time), could router become infected and carry it on?
For example Windows to Windows and Windows to Mac?

Nope, different ISP, who is just using their tech.
Thank you!
