i bought a external hard drive and im putting a new copy of windows on it do i have to format it to boot from it.............. and if so can i still use it as a regular hard drive. thanks for all the help 
You want the OS on the external drive? Why?
1. You can't, mostly. Well you can, but it is a pain to do so.
2. It would be very, very slow if/when you manage to make it work.
Again...Why are you wanting the OS on this external drive?
