New i7 6950x shows as 8 cores on motherboard. (Should be 10)

I have a new i7 6950x processor installed on an ASUS Rampage V Edition 10 motherboard. The motherboard reports it as 8 cores. It does have the latest BIOS. V1003.
Note, after saving the BIOS and rebooting, it won't start and shows a CPU error LED on the Motherboard. Resetting the BIOS does bring alive again, with the same report of 8 cores symptom.

Any thoughts as to something I have missed?

Could just be an error with the BIOS, try installing Windows and getting a direct reading of how many cores are detected in your system with CPU-Z.

Turns out it was a fake 6950x CPU. The vendor took it back without issue. I think they were stung by this pretty bad.

More or less the same thing, a used CPU is a far different case than if you were to have bought a new CPU and had issues with it. Not to worry, all solved now.
