Is the i7-4790 still a good CPU for gaming?

Hi there,

I'm planning on updating my CPU soon, and I've got a pretty sweet deal on an new i7-4790 (non-K) processor

I don't want to upgrade my motherboard and memory because they're still fairly new, but I thought a new CPU would be a nice addition for my rig (I'm currently using an i5-4670 with an H81M-C mobo, not planning on overclocking at all)

Is the i7-4790 any good for 4K gaming on Medium-High settings, paired with a GTX 1070 in an SSD-only system?

Happy new year :pt1cable: ,
Peter

Resolution makes no difference to CPU load so the fact you want to go 4k only puts extra load on the GPU. Although the 4790 is a great CPU for 60Hz/fps gaming its not going to give you much improvement, maybe in BF1 but not much else. If you haven't bought the 1070 yet I would use the extra money for a 1080 and stick with your current CPU. The 1080 will give you material gains at 4k.

If it can keep its Turbo Boost frequency of 4GHz with the Dark Rock 3, it would be just on par with the much more expensive 4790K without any overclocks (which I obviously couldn't do with an H81 mobo), and a fairly good upgrade from the current i5-4670 (4C/4T, 6MB cache, Turbo Boost 3.7GHz) :D

Not sure if the added 2MB of L3 cache, 300MHz faster clock speed, and 1 extra threads per core (4C/8T) would mean a huge difference, but I guess that some CPU-heavy games would benefit from it
