I had connect to my AUSU P5Q PRO Motherboard two IDE devices. Unfortunately my computer has trouble detecting them. I tested two configurations:

- DVD as master
- HDD as slave
-> BIOS and Windows 10 installer won't detect HDD, Windows XP SP3 installed on other SATA HDD see both.

swap jumpers and cable positon:
- DVD as slave
- HDD WD 160GB as master
-> BIOS and Windows 10 installer detect both, but Windows XP SP3 installed on other SATA HDD detect neither.

I tested different HDD (WD 40GB with identical jumper options and settings) and in both configurations it works fine.

HDD WD 160GB was tested as slave in different computer and it work fine.

some devices have to be the master to work. If its detected in bios but not in windows it might be formatted incorrectly for windows. fat 32 is the correct format for xp.

ok i understand now. you have dual boot and in one it works correctly when master but not in the other and vice versa.

you have to go with the one where the bios detects both with the HDD as master. you cannot change what the bios can do.

so the problem is in that configuration the other windows XP sp 3 dopesnt detect the volumes at all

does it appear in device manager? does that xp3 on the sata version of windows have the correct IDE drivers?

When HDD is set to master XP don't display DVD and WD 160GB in device manager.
When HDD is set to slave XP display DVD and WD 160GB in device manager and in file explorer.
In XP I install all driver from motherboard drivers disk it didn't make any difference.

The most strange thing for me is how XP can detect WD 160GB (when as slave), but BIOS don't see it.

Hi

Most old motherboards had two ide ports supporting 4 devices
There is master, slave and cable select options

I would suggest putting devices on different ports ( And ribbon cables )
Both Set to master with disk on end connector

The hard disk needs a 80 wire ribbon cable, the cd or dvd drive may work with a 40 way ribbon cable

There is master, slave and cable select options
I tested all posiblities:
-DVD on end of ribbon cable as master, HDD in the middle as slave
-DVD on end of ribbon cable as slave, HDD in the middle as master
-DVD in the middle of ribbon cable as master, HDD on end as slave
-DVD in the middle of ribbon cable as slave, HDD on end as master
-DVD on end of ribbon cable in cable select mode, HDD in the middle in cable select mode
-DVD in the middle of ribbon cable in cable select mode, HDD on end in cable select mode

I would suggest putting devices on different ports
Motherboard is from 2009 - has six SATA ports and ONE ATA port. I tested:
-DVD not connected, HDD on end of ribbon cable as master
-> BIOS and Windows 10 installer detect, but Windows XP SP3 installed on other SATA HDD not detect
And ribbon cables
I swap ribbon to brand new ASUS cable with no efect. I'm using 80 wire ribbon cable.

I noticed somthing else: when HDD is connected as master XP takes longer to boot - progress bar freezes for around 30 second, when HDD is not connected or is connected as slave this doesn't happen.
