Bad Framerate in games, overheated CPU?

Hi, I'm having an issue with my fps, while playing games.
Lately I got a new GPU, Geforce GTX 1060. Although my fps is low on any "high end games".
I checked my GPU, RAM, and CPU, everything seemed fine BUT the cpu in going in ~100C.
Could this be the reason why my fps is low? OR do I just need a new CPU?

Edit: I'm using the "original" CPU cooler that came with the CPU.

Specs:
Intel Core i5, 3750k 3,4 Ghz
Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 6GB
16GB RAM DDR3

Thats a great cooler. You should definitely have way lower temps then.

As notj0e said, you'll hear the cpu fan ramping up loud at these temps.

Download and run something like MSI Afterburner; you might already have an alternative installed. With this software running, check out how much overhead you have with the CPU, GPU and memory - both when a game is running (load), and, when no game is running (idle). What do you see?

I recently got the new gpu and thought the old one was the reason for the bad fps, so i don't really know. Guessing its not a new thing, i probably just havnt noticed it before.
It goes really fast tho, 100C at the loading screens.

The CPU temp is around 80~90C at idle, 100~105C at while game is running.

100c is dangerously high. I think it will shutdown at 105c. Something is very wrong with the cooling.

Is the CPU fan spinning? Is the CPU cooler clear from dust and does your case have good airflow? I'd also replace the thermal paste between the CPU and cooler. Using this pc like this risks damage, you must fix it.

If I were to change the CPU cooler to a better one (instead of the small "original" one), change the thermal paste, could this fix the problem?, Or could it be a permanent problem so I would have to replace the CPU?

I understand this is is "impossible" to know in forehand, but what do you think?

Have you cleaned out that cooler with some compressed air? Btw I would advice replacing the stock cooler as with ivy bridge cpu's it really had a lot of trouble cooling them.

I have cleaned the fan from dust, today. Doesn't seem to do any different, guessing the fan might be bad. Running loud really fast, and haven't changed the thermal paste, ever.

I advice you just get a hyper 212 evo and replace the crappy intel cooler with it. Just clean the cpu's old thermal paste of when you do that before applying the new one.

"The CPU temp is around 80~90C at idle, 100~105C at while game is running."

80~90C at idle means something is wrong with the CPU cooling - you should not see this in a 'default system'!

- If you have overclocked your CPU you NEED to restore CPU defaults e.g. in BIOS.
- If you have not overclocked the CPU or still have a problem then you NEED to confirm that your CPU fan is working and/or re-seat your CPU (wipe off old paste and apply new).

I'm going to buy a new CPU cooler, and thermal paste. be Quiet! Pure rock. After I've installed it I'm going to report back to see if it does the trick!
Meanwhile I'm not going to use the PC.

Thanks for all responses!

Stock intel cpu coolers are fidgety, open up your case and take a look at the cpu cooler, there should be 4 push-pins on each corner of the cooler. Push the pins in, until you can either feel a little click, or hear it, then turn the pin to the right.

Here is a video to help you better.

Yes, i did this yesterday ! I'm thinking the thermal paste might have dried because it seemed a little loose.

The application of thermal paste plays a huge role in temps. Some people are fanatical about it.

If there's air gaps, or dry, stale thermal paste between the cpu cooler and the cpu heatspreader then that is most likely the cause for your extremely high temperatures.

I'd still recommend getting an aftermarket cooler and reapplying the thermal paste for lower idle temps and quieter operation

Yes tomorrow I'll revive my new cooler, be quiet pure rock.
Also new thermal paste, I'll report back with the progress!

Okay, the new cooler is installed and it lowered my temp to ~55C (from 105C). Absolutely amazing!
Also as my original problem with low framerate in game, this fixed it! My games run at 70ish fps and CPU works like a charm!

From the looks of it the stock cooler was a bit loose and it seemed like the thermal paste had dried out.

Thanks for all your answers and support, it saved me a lot of money and time! Instead of a new CPU and Motherboard I only paid ~40euro for a new cooler!

And an added bonus is that you now can (if your motherboard allows it) oc your cpu if you ever need more performance.

Ah yes, this will be the next thing to figure out ;)
