About two or three years ago, I bought the R9 290x with the stock cooler. Needless to say, the stock cooler isn't very good... but I had good ventilation in my system, and everything worked out. However, I recently moved my PC into a mini ITX build, with very little ventilation. The GPU reaches temperatures around 90-94 C...

I was just wondering what the easiest aftermarket cooler would be for the R9 290x.

I'm thinking the Accelero III, however, I was also told that the most efficient coolers with my case are those that utilize more of a blower method, than a three fan system. Either way, I imagine it would be better than my current option ^^

Since late 2013 there hasn't been much development in the aftermarket Air cooled GPU scene primarily since Zalman abandoned it after they went through some financial concerns and your most likely option is to go for the Arctic/Gelid/Thermalright(if you can find them)/Raijintek solutions or go for a completely custom built approach(which isn't going to be cheap).

You could scour this shortlist or these:

Might I ask what case you're building in? Even though you may want to slap on an aftermarket air cooler on your GPU, it might not bode well for the rest of the components in your chassis or might hamper all that are residing in your chassis.

By stock, do you mean the squirrel cage fan blower style cooler or the stock fan by a third party PCB maker? Being specific on the make and model would help multiple folds.

I actually put it all together already. I'm using the Raven RVZ02b, and unfortunately the temps are in the 90-94C range (under high duress of course, idle is a lot lower 60-70) :/

The GPU is housed in a completely separate compartment in the case by using an extension from the PCI slot.

By stock, I mean the squirrel blower as you call it. I bought the card before there were other options. Not sure what the original was called, I believe it has Radeon labeled on it rather than like Asus or something. It was the stock card in every means of the sense.

Thanks for the help :)

Hmmm, [strike]I'm assuming you got a hold of the none acrylic/windowed version of the case which has considerably less ventilation holes above the GPU area...?[/strike]

I've worked with the ArcticCooling Accelero III and it's not a 2/2.5/3 slot card it's closer to 3.5 IMHO.

So you're going to have to work with dual slot coolers. Is it possible to sell the GPU and pick up something current gen?

Unfortunately, I got the non-windowed version. I never much liked the aesthetic of windowed cases :/

It would be possible, but I'd rather wait until I upgrade my entire PC... as it's on LGA 1150 at the moment. I don't think the dual slot coolers would be an issue, as the card is no longer on the motherboard. It's tucked away in its own area via an extension, meaning the cooler could be as wide as it needs to be. As long as it doesn't physically need two slots to power it... which I've never seen anything like that.

Basically, I just want to know what would be the easiest cooler to work with. Nothing that requires drilling into the card or anything of that sort. Or the least amount of it, with the most documentation available.

To reiterate, the GPU is 2 slots wide, the cooler is much wider than that by about another 1.5 slots. I suggested something current gen since today's cards are lower powered and require less of a cooling solution to tame their cores.
