Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (10.0.14393)
Intel 6700k (OC to 4.6GHz)
32GB Crucial Ballistic Sport 2400MHz DDR4
ASUS Z170S Sabertooth
EVGA GTX 1070 FTW
Dell 27" GSYNC 2560 x 1440 (main/DP)
HP 23" 1920 x 1080 (secondary/HDMI)

Sorry for the novel in advance... This situation has happened while exiting 2 different older games from Steam (KOTOR 2 and RE4). The PC is rock solid during all other usages: newer games, 3dMark Benchs and Stresses, other various Stress Tests.

Launch older Steam game.
Play game as normal (1440p resolution).
Select "QUIT" in the game.
Both monitors go blank. Keyboard/mouse not responsive. No mouse cursor.
Hard power off using on/off button (only choice).
POST fails, screen states "Overclocking Failed" then shows something about the RAM (which I interpret as the XMP settings for the RAM failing, not really the CPU OC).

At that point, I reset the ASUS MOBO to default in UEFI, restart, open Windows. Then restart again, set XMP for RAM and OC settings, everything goes back to normal. Pass all stress tests and nothing will happen until I try to run those old games again.

I almost think it is the switch/handoff from the game in full screen back to the OS, maybe the NVIDIA driver crashing it. But why would the POST / XMP / RAM OC fail, unless it is causing some sort of RAM issue that needs to "reset" (for lack of a better word)???

I have seen similar posts, but nothing exactly matching what I am seeing, any ideas???

Thanks in advance.

Solution
try enabling v-sync on the older games to lower their demand.

Running Older games at insane frame rates (200+) will do strange things to subsystems which don't normally get stressed.

This OC is like 6 months old, it has been very solid. The only issues I have had are when I ran the older Steam games, i.e. KOTOR2/RE4. Once I correct the problem, I can go back to normal gaming and usage, I do not see problems until I try to run one of these older games. I have over 200+ hours in Witcher 3, 100+ hours in Dying Light, and lots more hours in various "new" games, no issues.

Back when I originally OCed my build, I ran Prime95, Intel, RealBench, 3dMark, and others in the stress test realm. I was always at maximum high 60s in temp and never saw errors/issues. I ran Prime95 for 12+ hours overnight last night just to make sure something didn't change, same stable results.

I am convinced something with the newer GPU drivers coupled with the older games on Steam and high resolution / full screen mode is somehow putting the RAM or the BIOS in a weird state and then making the XMP profile fail on reboot. Maybe something with Windows 10 and the older games needing compatibility mode...
