I have come here to seek help. My Seagate 2TB Expansion Portable Drive stopped working after starting up PC on New Years. At first it showed up in File explorer, but whenever I clicked or even right clicked it it would freeze everything. To the point where I can't even open the Ctrl+Alt+Delete menu thing. I had to hold down power button on desktop so shut it down.

Now it doesn't show up anywhere, not in disk manager, not in my motherboard bios, nowhere. I tried to used the official Seagate SeaTools but that didn't do anything, the HDD simply won't be detected. I tried other 3rd part recovery software, mini-tool discovered the device once when it didn't show up anywhere but when I clicked recovery, it froze everything again. I've tried different USB ports, I tried plugging it into 2 other Pcs to no avail. Even voided my warranty as it's less than 5 months old (now seeing that may have been stupid idea) by opening the cover and plugging it directly into the motherboard through SATA cable. The device does make the usual spinning sound so it is definitely on, but still does not come up.

I have a youtube channel and which has over 1TB (more than 48 hours worth) of gameplay footage saved along with some backups of important files and family photos, so I really do want a way to fix this, without losing the data stored on it.
As i said, this is my last resort. I have browsed through multiple threads on this very site which brought up no help.

[Update:] I left the HDD plugged in during a gaming session. Out of nowhere I get the USB connected notification and there it was! Everything accessible, I knew that the problem will come back so I copied my most important stuff first. Then about 30 minutes later it vanished again during copying. I am totally confused at what it is doing. So now I know it wasn't dead, so now the question is, will it show up again? And if I save all my files, will a simple format fix the disk? Or is it something shorting out in the electronics?

[Update 2:] So before I went to bed last night I went to shutdown my PC and accidentally clicked restart. On boot text showed up in the lines of "Scanning and Repairing Drive J:" Catching my curiosity I logged back in just to see whats going on, and once again. It was there. I first need to clear space from my laptop before copying the remaining 1.2TB of data.

Thanks for all the help. :)

[Update 3:] This has now turned into a form of cat and mouse. Every time it comes back I have to copy as much data as possible before it disappears again. I have no idea what I'm doing to make it come back every few hours. I'm gonna continue to keep you guys up updated.

[Update 4:] This morning the beeping ( I believe it was 2 short beeps and 1 longish one) and in boot its said my disk is broken and I should replace it.

Try reconnecting all your SATA cable and power. Also when it turns on do you hear an clicking that repeats....if so your HDD is dead and that is why it won't show up anywhere. LMk once you have reattached all your cables at both ends if that changed anything.

There is no clicking noises. Have already tried a different SATA cable and different SATA ports, nothing.

Hi there ryan_hunt,

It's good that you've managed to back up at least some of the data.

Except for SATA cable and port, you can try using a different power cables as well.

If the issue persists, then I believe it will not hurt to see if the drive would be recognized under Ubuntu. You will need to get a flash drive or a CD, so you can just boot (don't install it) Ubuntu: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode

Cheers,

Power cable isn't the problem, issue was with both the USB connectors and the internal power and SATA layout.

The HDD has appeared to fix it self now. However, I have uncovered something that i believe caused the problem. My USB 3.1 port. After the HDD stopped working I bought 2 Brand New 3.0 USB's, both we're plugged into that same USB 3.1 port (different times) and both fried. So I'm assuming this was a manufacturing fault. Very angry about that but what can I do. Thanks for the help anyways.
