Trying to pick a gaming laptop over a gaming desktop - is there A LOT of difference in performance?

I was thinking of buying a new gaming PC as my current one is not adequate for most of the new games coming out. I am also most likely going to be moving about a fair amount of this year due to my job, but I want to use what I am buying.. hence why I am thinking about a gaming laptop.

The prices do not seem to be a lot different, in fact the laptop seems to be cheaper. Anyone have any experience with laptop gaming and have any words of wisdom to share?

Solution
If you need portability, buy a laptop.

Otherwise, buy a desktop.
You will get larger/better monitors and stronger components for less.
Laptop displays top out at 17" and they are not cheap.
a desktop with a 24" display will be better.

A desktop and components can be transported without too much trouble.
You might favor a M-ZTX or even ITX for easier transport.
