Computer crashes while playing games (sometimes)

Alright so my PC has been having a boat load of troubles lately, ranging from blue screening with multiple different stop code to power supply issues to games randomly crashing and either black screening and crashing, or blue screening.

It was fine a couple weeks ago, but I decided to go out and buy a new CPU ( https://www.ple.com.au/Products/611022/AMD-FX-8350-Black-Edition-AM3-40GHz-Retail-Box ) and that's when everything started happening. I'm sure I put it in properly but I haven't tried reseating it.

Since receiving all of these issues I have completely wiped (not formatted) my only HDD, installed a fresh (non activated because I don't have a key) copy of Windows 10 Pro. I've also run memtest86 only to get 48/48 (though i don't know much about memtest).

I'm thinking that my problems are coming from either my PSU the PC became less problematic after switching it from performance to energy-saving mode. I also think that the problems could be coming from some driver causing issues, but the blue screens aren't telling me which one :/

I probably have some more information about these issues but can't currently think of them off the top of my head.

If you want more information about my PC specs or .dmp files or anything I'll happily supply.

Cheers. :)

Solution
Yes the bios was the real issue here. You were lucky the pc would run at all with that old of a bios and that new cpu.

I wouldn't run IntelBurnTest for 24 hours, don't see the need.It creates alot of heat and imo unnecessary right now .I think it serves it's purpose as short tester, but have had overclocks be bad with prime 95 when ITB said it was alright.

And you're welcome.:)

Mobo: Asrock 970 Extreme4
CPU: AMD FX(tm)-8350 Eight-Core Processor
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti
RAM: 8Gb https://1drv.ms/i/s!Ap9sorGGyqt9iGRbW9XW2VRjEnAG
OS: Microsoft Windows 10 (build 14393), 64-bit
PSU: https://1drv.ms/i/s!Ap9sorGGyqt9iGVCVhnPN6Vr8OGD

Sorry about the pictures, idk how else to find them without taking them out.

Also, sorry about the links to the pictures :p just copy-paste I guess. Idk why it stops at the "!"

That psu is utter garbage and in no way possible to even come close to 1000w. Get that replaced asap with a better unit.

yeah that's what I thought. Got the PSU given to me second-hand to me when I knew absolutely nothing about PCs.

Do you have any recommendations for a new PSU? Keep in minf that I'm probably going to upgrade to a new mobo ( https://www.ple.com.au/Products/624249/ASUS-970-Pro-Gaming-Aura-AM3-ATX-Motherboard ) and new GPU ( https://www.ple.com.au/Products/625872/Galax-GeForce-GTX1050Ti-OC-4GB-GDDR5 ) sometime in the near future.

Also, do you think that getting a new PSU would stop my problems? Or would there be more to it than that?

The corsair rmx series are great anda 550w unit will be plenty. Do not upgrade your motherboard as that is just throwing away money. The asrock extreme 4 is fine I have it and nothings wrong with it. With the money you save you might even be able to get the rx 480 / gtx 1060.

Sounds good :) Now will getting the new PSU stop the problems I'm having? Or do I have to do more searching to fix it?

It should stop it unless it damaged another part. Just get that psu and see what happens.

Alright thanks for the help :D

Ill come back to this thread once I have tried out the new PSU

Okay so I have returned to this thread but this time I have a new corsair 750W PSU.

One work-around I found for this problem was to go to my power options > Processor power management and change the min processor state to 20% and the max processor state to 60%. Ever since doing this I haven't had a single crash :)

Now back to the PSU. I have just installed it and changed the max processor state to 100% to see if I could run a game with my CPU running at 100%, but I blue screened again :(

I have now gone back to having the max processor state at 60% and it runs fine, but I would like to know why it crashes even with a 750W PSU. My guess is that the mobo is busted but I'm not sure.

which corsair PSU did you buy? Is it a tier one or two?

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html

If no then that may well still be an issue. More likely though is that your old PSU damaged your motherboard's capacitors or VRMs though it is possible your CPU was damaged. Only other thing i can think of is your CPU is not getting enough voltage from the motherbaord/PSU and when maxed out it is unstable. You could try checking your CPU voltages in both CPU-z and bios. Then manually set the voltage higher and see if it resolves the issue. I would test it much like overclockers do. Run intel burn test with your power settings at max processor state to 100%. Run at least 10 run throughs on maximum once you find a voltage that won't crash doing 10 try running intel burn test for a full day (300-500 run throughs or so on maximum, you can always manually stop it after 24hrs). If it stays stable there your good. Also keep an eye on your temps while doing this. If you exceed 80C-85C your temps are getting to high which could also be the cause of your crashes. linked below is the software you need to do as listed.

Thank you for the quick reply :)

How do I go about manually setting a higher voltage via the bios? I tried something (I set something to 1.550V but I forgot what, sorry) but all it ended up doing was blue screening my pc before it could load windows (something about a missing kernal)

As for the new PSU, I got what I believe to be a - http://www.corsair.com/en/tx750w - I got it off of a friend for $20 :)

haven't done an AMD build in a minute so I don't know all the bios settings for your exact build but generally speaking you looking for the CPU Vcore. Stock should be something under 1.4v...like 1.37-1.39V aprrox. Only increase this voltage and again not by much, do the smallest increase bios will allow, test if it fails increase Vcore again by smallest amount assuming temps stay cool. Folks using your board and CPU seem to be able to get 4.4GHZ overclocks at 1.425-1.44volts to give you an idea of when your volts is to high for the clock rate.

Okay so just so I understand what I have to do:
1. Change Max processor state to 100%
2. Increase VCore value in the smallest increments that is allowed
3. Boot Intel Burn Test and run on maximum for 10 tries
4. If it crashes, repeat 2 + 3
5. When I find a voltage that works, run Intel Burn Test for 300-500 tries whilst monitoring temps

if you can't find a stable voltage and your temps are good then your motherboard (MAAAYBE CPU) are likely defective or damaged by your old PSU. I would swap out motherboard first if you don't find a stable voltage within reason. IE you shouldn't need 1.45V for a stock clock to be stable.

Okay so I've already run in to a problem changing the voltages. I was following the steps (slowly increases voltage and what-not) and when I got to 1.3500V, my pc said that it couldnt turn off properlyand that the operating system could not be loaded because the kernel is missing or contains errors.

Error code: 0xc0000098

I changed the voltage from 1.3500V back down to the increment before it which was 1.3375V and it booted properly without that message showing up.

Any clue as to what might have happened?

You're right ,that is the first bios of all.Under "bios version" it says version 1.4. Go to the site for your motherboard, download the latest bios which is the only one available, put it unpacked (it's a zip file) on an empty usb stick and update the bios from within the bios.
Means using the instant flash method,so don't use the other two.It would be best to do with a supported cpu in.If you had no issues in the bios might this one work as well.If it goes wrong with this cpu in might that board be bricked.

so i decided to do it right now instead of tomorrow and it finished successfully. So what now?

Should my PC be fine or is there more that I have to do? I am so lost with what I should be doing it's funny
