I have a Dell Optiplex (dont know the version). I want to get a power supply (old one is 190w and now i am gonna buy 550w) for it so that i can upgrade to a better psu (old one is HD 5450 and now i am gonna buy HD 7770). Can i get both and fix it right into it or there would be a problem with the connections. I want to know if it would be compatible? Please advise me ASAP as i want to upgrade it fast. I want to do some video editing and gaming...

Edit : The power supply is of 290W and is 80 plus bronze. I have an i5 4590.

Take a look at how your motherboard is mounted onto the motherboard tray in the case. If they used a standard Micro-ATX form-factor motherboard, the screw holes would line up like the images below:

If you're not sure, take a picture of the inside of your computer and post it here and I can take a look.

You really need to find out the model number and form factor of your system. Some Dell systems (particularly those with lower power supplies) simply cannot be upgraded. Many Dell models also come in different form factors (Mini-Tower, Desktop, Small Form Factor, and Ultra Small Form Factor). The same model number can have different components based on the system's form factor.

The power supply didn't work with the motherboard. I have to buy a new motherboard now!

How do you mean the new power supply didn't work? Did it not connect correctly to the motherboard? I'd contact Dell first and see if there is power supply upgrade that will work with your current motherboard, because a new motherboard likely means a new OS as well.

It was actually my fault, I bought a mobo with 24 pin connector, but the mobo had 8, I didn't check that and now there is no other way instead of buying a motherboard... Which motherboard should I buy, for lga 1150? I am on a tight budget. Will GA-H81M-H good? I found it on the Tom's Hardware motherboard tier on tier 2 ... IT HAS A 24 PIN POWER CONNECTOR.

Ok. There are four possible processors with your system and all of them are on the CPU Support List for the Gigabyte GA-H81M-H motherboard. However, given that Dell saw fit to put in a proprietary motherboard in that system, there's no guarantee that they used a standard form-factor motherboard in the case. A micro-ATX motherboard may not work in that system. You will need to verify the motherboard tray (where you screw down your motherboard to) has the stand-off locations in the right places.

So I need to check out whether the gigabyte mobo fits into the stand off screws right? And how do I get to know that?
