Could Someone Recommend a Good Wireless Router?

Hi all,

Was hoping someone could recommend a good Wireless Router that meets all of the following requirements:

-Password Lockouts:
The router can be configured to only accept a certain number of login attempts per specified time interval (say, 5 login attempts every 10 minutes or so). I get a lot of password hack attempts on my router due to where I am. This is an essential feature for me.

-MAC Address Reconfigurable: The Router allows the user to alter the perceived MAC Address of the router via a certain menu option. This would ensure greater online anonymity.

-WiFi On/Off Switch: It would be very helpful if the router has a physical WiFi On/Off switch. Being able to disable the WiFi without having to log in to the Router's control panel is extremely convenient.

-WiFi Signal Strength Modulation: The more precisely the router allows the administrator to control the WiFi Signal Strength, the better. I'm in a densely populated area. Being able to precisely tweak the signal strength would be massively convenient.

-A Focus on Security: A Router with a superior Firewall, IDS/IPS, and advanced Packet Filtering would be ideal. I'm focused on security and also the ability to detect and trace malicious access attempts. The better and more detailed the Router's firewall and the more advanced its logging capabilities, the more clear my picture of network activity.

If anyone can name a router for an advanced, enthusiast home user that meets the above criteria, please do so.

Your assistance much appreciated.

Solution

Modern Wifi equipment utilizing WPA2 with AES encryption and a long, complex password is virtually invulnerable to passkey cracking. Make sure you turn off the insecure WPS function and your wifi will be secure.

-MAC Address Reconfigurable:
Most newer good quality routers have this capability

-WiFi On/Off Switch:
While I can't say this doesn't exist, I have never seen a physical switch to control the wifi on a router. IME, control is always done through the firmware.

-WiFi Signal Strength Modulation:
Many newer good quality routers have the ability to turn down the signal strength. Access points from Engenius and Ubiquiti do to.

-A Focus on Security:
Security has...

There's literally more good routers than you can shake a stick at. Find a cheap one from a company with a good rep that has the barest features you want and go with it.

Security has several components. WiFi access, and the firewall being the most important.

The most security focused and flexible routers focus on the firewall and require separate wifi access points. Look at Ubiquiti entry level professional equipment. Or set up an old PC as a router with pfSense. Either will bring more flexibility to your firewall than the most consumer grade unified WiFi routers. Properly set up wifi will be secure on new equipment.

I always recommend Asus for unified routers for the quality of the interface and flexibility in the settings. Others on this forum like different manufacturers more. Given your requirements, if you want a unified router, look for equipment that can load DD-WRT or Tomato. Check out the DD-WRT website for a list of supported equipment. http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index

Or check the major manufacturers for a router that is made to be compatible with WRT firmware that is in your price range.
