I'm running a Windows 10 free upgrade, the previous license is a Windows 8 retail version. I'm looking to upgrade my motherboard and don't know how to start. If I were to do a reinstall of Windows 10, would I have to do it prior or after peicing everything in? Would I be able get an installation file from Microsoft (I don't know where the original disk is). I'm not concerned on losing any files, I would just like to make sure there are no hardware conflictions.

Solution
Fit your new board then install Windows from a USB drive (get it here https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10) and reactivate, choosing the hardware upgrade option.

Make sure you link your Microsoft account with Windows on your old system first, and then use it to sign in on the new motherboard installation, so you transfer the product key.
