Hi guys,

Just looking for some advice on my RAM situation.

Ive just recently got my hands on 2x8gb hyperx furys at 1866mhz. I currently have a ASrock n68-gs4-fx motherboard and i am looking to upgrade to something better. My question is for the meantime am i able to use this ram with this motherboard effectively. I tried and it seems to be restricted to 535mhz so i guess it cant reach its full potential until i upgrade?

Also what mobo would you guys suggest me getting? Quite stumped on what i should choose right now.

Solution
That motherboard should support up to DDR3 1866: http://www.asrock.com/mb/nvidia/n68-gs4%20fx/

I can't really recommend building a new computer today though as Intel and AMD are releasing new architectures in the coming weeks.

If you do want to build now, you should update your original post to match this form: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/353572-31-build-upgrade-advice
It includes all the information we need to help you.

Do you already have a CPU? If not, you should start looking for the best CPU that motherboard will support if you're already committed to using both of those parts.

Here's the compatible CPU list: http://www.asrock.com/mb/NVIDIA/N68-GS4%20FX/?cat=CPU
I'd go for a Phenom II x4 960T BE myself...

Thanks for the assist i went into the bios and adjusted the mhz.

My current specs are:
Windows 10
AMD FX-6300
16gb RAM - 2 hyperx furys 8gb each
Motherboard- ASRock n68-gs4 FX
2gb gtx 960
400w power supply

Was mainly looking to upgrade the psu, mobo and cpu as well as some suggested coolers to be able to cope with most games at high settings. Ill take a look at that link and write up a update form, thank you once again.

I think your 2GB GTX 960 should handle most games at 1080p on high for at least another year.

You might have to overclock your CPU for some games, but that 960T I suggested earlier won't help you (so don't buy that). Your platform (AM3+, DDR3, & CPU) is approaching the end of it's useful life, but you should still be able to get some good gaming out of it.

What kind of PSU do you have? If it's a good model, then 400W can be okay, just not with any overclocking. If you find a good 550 to 650W on sale, that will make your current build safer, give you some room to overclock, and work for your next build in two years.

If you are buying a CPU, stick to Antec, Corsair, Seasonic, Silverstone, or XFX unless you find a very good thorough review (like JonnyGuru) on that unit. Here's the kind of sale you might want to keep your eyes peeled for: https://slickdeals.net/f/9622328-650-watt-seasonic-x-650-80-plus-gold-certified-full-modular-active-pfc-power-supply-for-49-99-ar-free-shipping-newegg-com?src=SiteSearch
A bad PSU will slowly kill the other components in your system.

Im not sure what make my psu is but im pretty sure its a pretty cheapo one. That is definitely in need of an upgrade. Thanks for the suggestions you threw my way though! One last thing and it may sound silly but what exactly do you mean by my platform (am3+, ddr3 and cpu) is approaching the end of its useful life?

I mean that the AM3 and AM3+ sockets by AMD are essentially dead. AMD's new Zen architecture will be moving to the AM4 platform and use DDR4 memory within a month or so. So your motherboard, can't take the new chips or new RAM. Also, your RAM and CPU can't go in new motherboards.

It's fine for now. And you should use it so long as the gaming is smooth. You've got an adequate gaming processor, but it doesn't have an upgrade path. But your next computer will only be able to use your case, HDD, optical drive, and PSU. So you may as well upgrade the PSU to protect all of your parts.

Generally you can read the manufacturer on PSUs. If it's Logisys, I've literally seen them start smoking. Even with out the smoke, I've seen several of these cheap power supplies take down hardware components before going out themselves.
