Torn between upgrades, need a 3rd opinion.

So I've been fretting over my next upgrade for the the past few weeks. I'm completely TORN between upgrading my graphics card, or my CPU. I need both pretty equally and I could really use a third opinion.
Here's my current system:
ASUS Pro Gaming AURA 970 Motherboard
AMD FX 6300 (OC'd to 4.5GHz)
8GB DDR3 RAM
1TB WD BLACK HDD
XFX R9 280x 3GB GPU
Cooler Master Hyper T3 Cooler
Sentey 725w PSU
Corsair SPEC 02 Redshift Edition

Now I'm torn between upgrading my CPU or my GPU. I'd really like to get an i5 6600k with a Z170 motherboard, but that's a lot of money. I could easily settle for an i5 6500 with a non-Z170 motherboard (because I can actually afford that), but I would have to get DDR4 RAM (which I cannot affort). Now I could get an i5 4590 with a Z97 motherboard for MUCH cheaper (i5 4590 being $160 at Microcenter and a good Z97 motherboard being about as expensive as a non-Z170 motherboard), and I could continue to use the DDR3 RAM that I have in my system right now.
The other upgrade I'm torn about is the GPU, my current XFX R9 280x has some serious driver issues as it sometimes flickers and crashes, sometimes I get lucky enough to where it fixes itself in about 20 seconds, but most of the time I have to restart the computer. This card also runs extremely hot and loud. I would like to upgrade to a GTX 1060 6GB, but the market jumped and they are a bit out of my reach (about 40-60 dollars). I was looking at the RX 480 8GB, but it costs only 10-20 dollars less than a 1060. So I looked at the 4GB version, then realized the RX 470 GB would be a nice upgrade for a really nice price, leaving me some extra money to do something else.
I can only have ONE upgrade so a nice third opinion would really help.

Provided your PSU is capable of handling the GPU, I'd say the RX480 route but you're eventually going to get frustrated by the CPU bottleneck and then call for an all out platform upgrade. Kabylake is already upon us so that would be something you can look forward to.

Don't get too excited about Ryzen though since you're going to need DDR4 ram for that platform as well meaning anything you have right now except the case, HDD and perhaps the cooler are not worth the salvage.

Sorry I think I misread that,
So are you saying that I should go down the RX 480 route or wait for Kaby Lake and ZEN to upgrade?

Okay so I did some digging around and I bought my coworker's EVGA SuperNOVA 650w PSU for like 20 bucks because he was upgrading. It snowed today so I went out with my snowblower and made an extra $150. So I bought a i5 7600k and an ASUS Z170 motherboard and I'm going to sell my old mobo, cpu, and ram to get DDR4 RAM and an RX 480 8GB. I got lucky and managed to sell my mobo for $120 in one day, still have to sell cpu and ram. Thanks for everyone's help I appreciate it.
