Hi there,

Just built a new computer and bought a Hitachi GST Deskstar 7K2000 2TB hard drive. Installed everything and transferred hours and hours of data. Then I started to notice a quiet "click" noise. Every 4 seconds it will just make a click. I got worried since my last hard drive never made a clicking noise and lasted over 5 years. I decided it was time to get a new hard drive in fear of it crashing and losing everything so I bought this hard drive. I really hope this clicking noise is normal on the Hitachi. It is a little annoying to hear a click almost like a clock every 4 seconds.
Please let me know if this is a bad sign and I should get it replaced.

Thank you,

Jeff

Hi there JeffieJeff,

Unfortunately, you may need to RMA it. Clicking every 4 secs is not really a normal sound for healthy HDDs. My suggestion would be to back up the data stored on the drive until you sort this out.
After that, you can attach the drive with different cables to another SATA port. Make sure it is fastened tightly.
Also, you can run some tests on it: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
See if there are some pending/reallocated/uncorrectable sectors in the SMART report.

Apart from that, you should always keep the data you can't afford to loose stored on at least two places.

I'm not all that familiar with that model, although I am with HGST/Hitachi HDDs. A normal head seeking sound is one thing... but a solid click, that doesn't sound good at all. I'd say replace it. In the process of replacing it see if you can get a 7k3000 series model instead with a 64MB buffer instead of the 32MB buffer on that one.

Like this one... Hitachi Ultrastar 7K3000 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

I have this one and it is pretty quiet.

EDIT: admittedly no pricing on the one I suggested right now... This one does have pricing though:
