I have a GTX 1080 and whenever I play GTA V I get 80+ fps no problem for just about 10-15 min. Then I start getting sudden frame drops and lag spikes. I've checked and all my drivers are up to date and my temps never exceed 75 degrees. I've also tried lowering the settings but nothing changes still get lag spikes. This really just doesn't make the game fun and sometimes its even unplayable because of how bad the lag spikes have gotten.

I also have this exact problem and i've tried many things to fix it but none have helped me, they might help you though

Here's a list of solutions:

  • Turn down all the settings and reduce render distance
Use directX 10 instead of 11
Se the game priority to high and the launcher priority to low in the task manager
Uninstall your current gpu drivers (using display driver uninstaller) and perform a clean installation
Uninstall your current gpu drivers and install an older more stable version
Go to the nvidia control panel>manage 3d settings>program settings (then choose gta 5) then make multi display single display performance mode and make power managment mode: prefer maximum performance
If your gta is the steam version then try...

What is the make and model of your PSU. If it is low quality or going bad it could cause the spikes you speak of through bad power delivery as the PSU heats up. Also you could try running DDU in safe mode then reinstall the drives to see if that helps.

Also another thing to not down is this could be caused due to a memory leak. You can find out if it is a memory leak by downloading msi afterburner and monitoring the ram usage to see how much of your ram is being used up.
