Hello everyone and happy new year!
Okay i kinda need advice from you all. We're in 2017 right now and I'm saving up for upgrading my cpu or vga but i can't upgrade both of them at once, even maybe I'll leave one of them as it is for some time.

Here's my rig:
CPU: I5-4460
Mobo: AsRock H81-M
VGA: Galax GTX 970 EXOC
RAM: 2x4gb ddr3 (i forget the brand)
PSU: Corsair VS 550
LCD: Benq XL2411z

I think my cpu is a bit behind and my motherboard is utterly crap, but some of my friends recommend that i better upgrade my vga, and if i upgrade my cpu i have to change my motherboard and even change my ram, which is took a longer time to saving (even longer if upgrading motherboard beyond H110-M).

But if i upgrade my vga let's say 1070, i don't know if my cpu bottlenecks it. And i kinda get the feeling that it would bottleneck vga above 1070 if I decide to go beyond 1070. Then again some people said that upgrading from i5 haswell to i5 skylake won't give that much of difference. And again, it would take a longer time if i went to i7.

I'm kinda concerned because i can't play some latest AAA games for more than 50fps, let alone 60fps. Even online games like DOTA 7 only run at 110fps and it dropped to 70-80 when big teamfight breaks out (with everything maxed out).

So, should i upgrade my cpu, motherboard, and ram or just upgrade my vga? And should i take a longer time to upgrade them nicely or should i upgrade within cheaper budget? I'm sorry for too much questions, sad thing I'm only your average student with a measly part time work so my budget won't be a lot.
Cheers and happy new year!

Your CPU is pretty good. Honestly, I would think about getting more RAM if you are having issues. Your CPU and GPU are still current even if it is a previous generation. Have you tried cleaning out your computer?

Hi herc
Yeah it's still capable but i'm having some worries like for the next games, would i be struggling or not and blah blah.
Even if it's fine now, i want to know what should i do when i finally got enough money.
Now that you mentioned it, i haven't cleaned them for around 7 months lol

It should be fine for the next two or three years. If you upgrade your CPU, you will also need to change out your motherboard as well.

Okay i think i could afford RAM next month.
16gb should be enough right? Is there any specific brand that is particularly good or should i just pick whatever the brand?

So RAM is the short term and VGA is the long term upgrade?

Hi GIll
I'm using Benq XL2411z, it's 1080p 144hz

I would recommend getting 8GBx2 set from Corsair, G Skillz or Crucial

Yes 16 GB is enough, you could choose between Dual 2x8 or Single stick 16GB, but as what ive read from some forums buying dual RAM has more advantage in terms of speed, make sure to check the RAM speed that your motherboard supports, I would recommend you to buy G skill or Corsair they're good brand.

PS: Sorry for my bad english :)

OK then A GPU would make the most sense as an upgrade in my opinion. You are not going to get to the 144hz with a new Cpu/Mobo and the 970, but you can with the old cpu and a new GPU. some games may be limited some by CPU but not very many.

1070 or 1080 will not bottleneck with your CPU but in order to play online games with alot of players ex. battlefield, Arma 3 you need CPU. If you gonna play this type of game go for a I7 4790K which is 0.5Ghz overclock able and is the best budget CPU for online games and fits to your MB. If you want more fps at the time you go for a GTX1080. But your low FPS in game may be from your CPU power because 970 can handle more than 140FPS in DOTA. I suggest you buy I7 4790K.
